Job Description:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invitesapplications for an open-rank faculty position in exploring the theory and utility of digital twins. This position is part of the RISE-AI Initiative.

We seek candidates specializing in a variety of domains related to digital twins, including but not limited to: 1) defining and illustrating the successful utility of digital twins through the integration of models and data for informed decision-making; 2) addressing fundamental physical, mathematical, statistical, and computational challenges in the bidirectional, real-time interaction between a physical system and its digital counterpart; 3) quantifying uncertainties of the created digital twins; 4) achieving the generalization capability in sparse data or even no data regimes including extrapolation; and 5) identifying avenues to further enhance the efficacy and adoption of digital twins.

Duties:

Teaching and developing inclusive undergraduate and graduate courses for a diverse student body in Mechanical Engineering, mentoring graduate students and supervising their research; developing and directing a successful, extramurally funded research program; participating in departmental and university faculty governance; contributing to professional and public service; and participating in interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts with other departments, schools and colleges.

Minimum Education:

PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a closely related field required

Training and experience:

Candidates will have a demonstrated record of academic achievement such as peer-reviewed publications and grant awards appropriate for the appointment level sought, exceptional potential in establishing a world-class research program and a demonstrated commitment to high-quality and inclusive undergraduate and graduate instruction in traditional mechanical engineering or engineering mechanics courses and/or new digital twins-based courses.

Associate and Full professor candidates must possess experience and scholarly credentials that meet the tenure standards of the UW-Madison Divisional Committee and of the College of Engineering.
