Job Description:

Biohabitats is seeking a Restoration Ecologist with a minimum of seven years' experience in New England ecosystems to join our growing Northeast Highlands and Coastal Bioregion team.

The ideal candidate will have training and practical experience in core disciplines relevant to the assessment and restoration of inland and coastal wetlands, riparian areas, meadow, and forests communities within the diverse New England ecosystems. The successful candidate will work with our multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and landscape architects to support biodiversity restoration, climate change adaptation, environmental justice and green infrastructure work for government, private and non-governmental organizations.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Support all aspects of ecological restoration project delivery including planning, assessments, design, permitting, construction oversight, and monitoring.
  • Perform ecological field studies, watershed assessments, biological monitoring and reporting for a variety of ecosystem projects.
  • Compile project findings ( e.g. habitat delineations, soil and sediment analyses, model results, stakeholder surveys, mapping, survey, etc.) into cohesive and comprehensive deliverables (e.g. reports, management plans, renderings, contract drawings and specifications, cost estimates, etc.).
  • Review project deliverables for compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and adherence to local and regional planning objectives.
  • Participate in client meetings, community and stakeholder engagements, and industry events.

Required Skills, Experience, and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated academic and professional experience in inland and coastal wetland ecology, field and desktop ecological assessment, and northeastern U.S. flora and fauna identification.
  • Understanding of the biological and physical processes that drive ecosystem functions and establish the foundation of conservation planning and ecological design principles such as: wetland science, river and stream dynamics, coastal resilience, landscape design, nature-based design, green infrastructure, and/or climate adaptations.
  • Understanding of the regulatory framework unique to the New England states.
  • Proficient in the use of ArcGIS and Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative, team environment.

Preferred Skills, Experience, and Knowledge

  • Experience in community engagement.
  • Working understanding of hydrologic and hydraulic principles.
  • Experience with geographic information systems (e.g., ArcGIS)
  • Restoration construction and plant installation oversight experience.
  • Experience in the preparation of construction specifications and cost estimates.

Years of Relevant Experience
7-12 years of relevant experience

Education
BS or MS in an ecology-related field of study (Restoration Ecology, Ecology and Natural Resource Management, Environmental Sciences, etc.)

Professional Registration
Relevant certification or ability to obtain within six months is a plus (e.g., Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner, Professional Wetland Scientist, Licensed Soil Scientist, etc.)

Salary Range
$90,000 - $110,000 (negotiable based on experience)

New England, Middletown, CT, preferred
