The College of Pharmacy is seeking an Associate Research Scientist to join their team. This individual will conduct highly technical and specialized research in cancer. Perform and coordinate translational research related to cancer drug development. Contribute to funding applications and perform research experiments, simulations, and investigations. Analyze data and disseminate research findings.
This is a two-year specified term appointment.
The College of Pharmacy has two academic units, offering a Doctor of Pharmacy program and three PhD programs. In addition, the college has a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) business unit named University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals (UIP), established almost 45 years ago it provides contract pharmaceutical manufacturing and testing services in a FDA regulated environment.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Experiments, Simulations, Modeling, or Theoretical Investigations
Initiate research design and methodology.
Coordinate transdisciplinary and translational research projects.
Develop hypotheses to be tested and select methodology.
Expand research expertise into new areas.
Work independently on complex research tasks with oversight by the Principal Investigator.
Data/Research Analysis and Evaluation
Develop new data analysis techniques or methodology.
Perform advanced data analysis techniques.
Dissemination of Research Results
May prepare and submit first-author manuscripts for publication.
May represent the entire research group at professional meetings.
Develop a recognized national reputation in the scientific community.
Develop a sustained record of scholarly publications and peer-reviewed principal-author scientific publications.
Research Proposals/Grants
Develop an established record of participation in successfully funded research grants or contract proposals.
Certify compliance with all University, state, and federal regulations when required.
Assume responsibility for all aspects of a research project or contract, including budget, expenditures, and agency reporting.
Select and purchase equipment as needed and approved.
Service
Seek leadership opportunities, which may include serving on scientific review panels.
Review papers and proposals.
Serve as a session chair or organize sessions at professional meetings.
Develop a reputation and recognition within the scientific community.
Human Resources
Mentor graduate or professional students.
May provide functional and/or administrative supervision for staff.
Assist staff with definition and solution of problems.
May perform the following supervisory functions including interviewing, selection, training, coaching and counseling to ensure outcomes are achieved, performance evaluation, salary determination, promotion, and disciplinary action.

Education Requirement
PhD in Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, or similar degrees; or other doctoral degree, such as PharmD.
Experience Required
Typically, two years of experience or knowledge performing one or more of the following:
Cancer mouse models (xenografts, organoids, humanized models).
Molecular biology and pharmacology methods including cell culture, microscopy, RT-PCR, ELISA etc.
Managing IACUC and other lab safety protocols.
Independent manuscript preparation.
Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
Desirable Qualifications
Postdoctoral experience related to drug discovery or development of cancer therapies.
Experience in conducting clinical trials and biomarker development.
Experience in biostatistical and bioinformatics analysis.
