Job Description

Cresset is seeking an individual for tax advisory, preparation, planning, and review efforts for a significant share of the firm's client base. The Director and their team will provide sophisticated tax planning, compliance, and research services to ultra-high net worth clients and collaborate with the Managing Directors and family office peers to offer integrated wealth planning. This position will report directly to the Managing Director, Tax, and compensation is commensurate with education/accreditation and relevant work experience.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Work within a team that provides tax advisory, compliance, planning, and review to Cresset's clients
  • Collaborate with family office peers (attorney, financial planner, and wealth advisor) and clients' other trusted professionals to provide integrated wealth planning
  • Advise clients on various tax issues, such as income, gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer taxes, charitable giving, asset protection, and succession planning
  • Utilize technology to automate, scale, and elevate the tax practice
  • Research and analyze complex tax matters and communicate findings and recommendations to clients and internal teams, including translating for non-tax professionals
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships and identify opportunities for additional services and referrals
  • Stay abreast of current tax developments, trends, legislation, and decisions from tax authorities and proactively apply them
  • Maintain a personal commitment to continuing education for professional development and growth
  • Participate in business development and marketing activities to grow the firm's tax practice

Qualifications & Characteristics
  • A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field
  • CPA certification
  • 10+ years' experience with federal, state, and local personal and trust income tax, of which a significant amount is in serving high net worth individuals, closely held businesses, partnership investments, estates, trusts, and private foundations
  • Material experience with federal and state partnership tax returns
  • A Masters or JD in tax, estate planning, or a related field is a plus
  • A thorough understanding of integrated family wealth planning, including estate and financial planning
  • A thorough understanding of incentive stock options, various equity compensation models, QSBS stock
  • Ability to quickly research, learn, and apply tax regulations in other jurisdictions, and newly promulgated regulations at federal and state levels
  • An understanding of California Franchise Tax Board regulations and community property rules
  • Experience with complex Schedules K-1, foreign reporting, and multi-state filings
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, their trusted advisors, and peers
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to clients, advisors, and others
  • "Big 4" tax experience a plus
  • Candidate should be confident and assertive, and able to garner the respect of others
  • The ability to operate independently and collaboratively in a dynamic and fast-paced environment is essential
  • Familiarity with UltraTax and/or CCH Axcess a plus
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with absolute discretion and demonstrate the highest level of client service, ethics, and integrity
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, and other office software and technology
  • Salesforce experience a plus
