Assistant Professor in Economic Geology

University of California Riverside


The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of California, Riverside, seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor. We welcome candidates with expertise in economic geology, ore mineralogy, critical minerals, hydrothermal geochemistry, or related fields at the interface of Earth and Planetary Sciences with mineral resources. Successful candidates could utilize a wide range of research methods, including but not limited to field-based research, laboratory and/or field geochemistry, and/or numerical calculations and modeling. We seek candidates who can bridge existing strengths in our diverse research efforts in igneous petrology, geochemistry, geodynamics, sedimentary geology, sustainability, and climate change. The department has 22 full-time faculty members and hosts a range of analytical laboratories used for elemental and isotopic characterization of geological materials that is expanding as part of a recently funded Critical Minerals Analytical and Training Center. This position can leverage new, upcoming, and existing UCR resources, as well as UCR's central geographic location near major historical and active mineral and energy resources and industry, including the Salton Sea Geothermal Field, and boron, salt, and Rare Earth Element mines of Southern California to establish a vibrant program of research at the interface between geology and mineral resources. Riverside is also within close driving distance to Los Angeles, San Diego, the Pacific Ocean, Joshua Tree National Park, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, offering unrivaled access for a wide variety of interests. The Riverside Metropolitan area also provides affordable housing and a strong, diverse community.

The UC salary consists of a base pay of $74,600 to $97,200 for Assistant Professors and additional off-scale to be commensurate with market value, qualifications and experiences. The off-scale portion of the salary will be maintained as long as satisfactory academic progress is made. Additionally, the off-scale will be maintained subject to market adjustments to the UC salary scale.

Basic qualifications for this position that must be met by the date of application include:
  • Demonstrated excellence in research and demonstrated (or the clear potential for) excellence in teaching.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:
  • Demonstrated success in fellowship and/or grant writing.
  • Experience in supervising the research of undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  • Experience in assisting teaching and/or leading teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

Additional qualifications for this position that must be met by the date of hire include:
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Earth Sciences or a related field.

Advancement through the Assistant Professor ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.
