Nature of Work


Harford County Sheriff's Office is seeking to establish an eligibility list for the position of Deputy Sheriff Recruit, with responsibility for delivering law enforcement service throughout Harford County.
POSITION IS ENTITLED TO A $10,000 RECRUITMENT INCENTIVE PAYMENT UPON HIRING AND COMPLETION OF TRAINING ACADEMY.



Examples of Duties

  • Patrols the County to maintain law and order.
  • Responds to calls for service.
  • Executes on-view arrests.
  • Checks County businesses for security.
  • Responds to reports of criminal complaints and makes necessary investigations.
  • Delivers personal service upon inhabitants of the County of civil process issued out of Circuit and District Court of Harford County and also those civil papers forwarded from other jurisdictions within the state and out of state.
  • Executes by arrests all warrants issued.
  • Transports prisoners to and from penal institutions and courts in and out of Harford County.
  • Maintains courtroom decorum during criminal trials and juvenile proceedings.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Graduation from a high school recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education OR possession of a GED certificate recognized by the Maryland Board of Education.
  • Valid Class D or Class C non-commercial driver's license with no more than three (3) points and a relatively clean driving record with no convictions for DUI or DWI, including Probation Before Judgment.
  • Must have no criminal convictions on record.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff's Office to the public.
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of Annotated Code of Maryland, Harford County Ordinances, Uniform Traffic Code, Harford County Sheriff's Office Rules and Regulations, Harford County Government resources, state and federal agencies, District Court Commissioner system, Circuit and Juvenile Court processes, and Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.
  • Ability to become skilled in the use of firearms, defensive driving, and self-defense techniques.
  • Ability to complete Firearms Qualifications, Physical Training, Academic Standards, and other training by the Sheriff's Office.
  • Ability to testify in court.
  • Knowledge of problem solving techniques, grammar, spelling, arithmetic, and verbal and non-verbal communication skills.



  • Selected Candidate:


  • Must be 21 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen with 10 years of verifiable US residency.
  • Must pass entrance level exam with or without reasonable accommodation (min. score 70%).
  • Must pass physical agility testing to begin the applicant process and just prior to receiving an offer for employment.
  • Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; polygraph exam; and psychological screening.
  • Must provide handwriting sample for review.
  • Must appear before and receive a favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.
  • Must attend mandatory pre-employment orientation program.
  • Must attend and successfully complete MPCTC Entrance Level Academy.
  • Visible tattoos are permitted if they are not offensive, indecent, extremist, racist or sexist. No visible tattoos will be permitted on the face or head.
  • Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity, and interpersonal skills. Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.

    ANNUAL LEAVE - Begin accruing first day of employment and cannot be taken until successful completion of probationary period, EXCESS of 40 DAYS [320 hours] will be deposited into an 106 Premium Reimbursement Account.




    0 months - 3 years 1 day per month (12 days per year)


    4 years - 9 years 1 ¼ days per month (15 days per year)


    10 years - 15 years 1 ¾ days per month (21 days per year)


    Over 15 years 2 days per month (24 days per year)

    SICK LEAVE - Begin accruing first day of employment (UMLIMITED ACCUMULATION)




    1 day is allowed after first month of employment


    1 ¼ days per month accumulation




    PERSONAL LEAVE - For new employees, personal leave is prorated according to schedule below, for the first year only. Any employee on board as of December 31st of each year automatically receives 8 days as of January 1st the following year. (NOTE: Personal Leave may not be taken until successful completion of probationary period; personal leave will be lost if not taken before December 31st of each year.)

    FAMILY LEAVE - Up to 12 weeks per year




    FUNERAL LEAVE - 3 days + 1 day for extended travel




    MILITARY LEAVE - 3 weeks per year with no loss in pay for Reserve or National Guard Training, Active Duty and serving during emergencies.




    CIVIL LEAVE - No loss in pay while serving Jury Duty.




    RETIREMENT - State Pension System (7% employee contribution)

    RETIREE HEALTH CARE INSURANCE BENEFITS-


    Employees hired on or after 7/1/2010 will have an automatic Retirement Health Savings account made available as the primary retiree healthcare benefit. This 105(h) Universal Reimbursement Account will only be able to be accessed upon separation of service and/or retirement whichever applicable. These accounts are employer funded, tax free, & portable with 20 different Nationwide investment options.


    These funds are solely for the use of offsetting your premium health care cost, prescriptions, co-pays and deductibles. Upon death funds are made available immediately to the surviving spouse or qualified dependents (as defined by the IRC 152 (a).
