Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:



The Strength and Conditioning Specialist will provide clinical care to student athletes at local high schools under the direct supervision of the Clinical Supervisor for Athletic Training and under the general supervision of the primary high school athletic trainer.


The Strength and Conditioning Specialist will be responsible for developing and coordinating the strength and conditioning program through the school year as well as during the summer for off season programs. The hours for this position will vary based on the demands of the school year.


The Strength and Conditioning Specialist will also work within the BWH Department of Orthopedic Surgery assisting with special projects for the Division of Sports Medicine.



*There is potential for a full time (40hrs) schedule for interested candidates.




PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:




GENERALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR:




  • Design and lead participants and patients through individual-specific programs identifying areas if weakness and imbalance to target with industry appropriate exercise in the realm of balance, agility, strength, power, flexibility and stability.

  • Analyze, test, and document participant ability and develop needs assessment.

  • Write and organize industry appropriate, progression-based exercise programs.

  • Develop and improve all aspects of anaerobic and skill-related training.

  • Implement appropriate aerobic training

  • May assist with ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, and helps to maintain the cleanliness of the fitness room.

  • May assist athletic trainers with off-site strength and conditioning clinics and programs.





  • SPECIFICALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR:



  • Reviewing all pre-participation medical forms and information relevant to student-athletes' initial medical clearance to participate in interscholastic athletic program.




  • Regular communication with the school's Primary Athletic Trainer and Athletic Director regarding the schedule of events for the athletic department.




  • Providing strength and conditioning services to student athletes participating in sports.




  • Communicating with coaches, parents, team physician, school nurse and specialists regarding strength and conditioning programming.




  • Communicating with athletic administration and coaches regarding specific athletes, injury trends, medical and health alerts, etc.




  • Designs, implements and carries out injury prevention programs with student athletes, based on


  • sport specific injury trend reports.



  • Performs other duties as appropriate in collaboration with the Primary Athletic Trainer, Team Physician and/or Athletic Director.




  • Responsibilities as a BWH Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Employee:



  • Maintains a safe, clean and orderly environment for athletes, coworkers and self by cleaning equipment and work area, storing supplies appropriately, handling equipment using appropriate body mechanics, and reporting any issues that require further maintenance or inspection to supervisor. Compliant with hospital regulations and athletic departmental procedures for infection control, electrical equipment safety, confidentiality, fire and disaster plans.




  • Appropriately uses equipment and supplies for the efficient and cost- effective operation of the athletic department and hospital.




  • Establishes effective working relationships with BWH coworkers including physicians, nurses, physical therapists, medical assistants, administration, secretaries and other pertinent personnel.




  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings.




  • Records and submits information required such as orientation and competency data, education log, yearly mandatory information etc




  • Collaborates on assigned projects that relate to the development of the Sports Medicine program.





  • Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS:





    • Graduate of accredited program in strength and conditioning or related field

    • National certification as a strength and conditioning specialist and/or MA licensure as an athletic trainer preferred

    • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications.

    • Certification by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) required

    Clinical orientation to the BWH environment, with documented record of clinical competencies for the service within three months of employment.



    SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:




  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication and customer service skills are essential.

  • Strong clinical and assessment skills are essential.

  • Good organizational skills are required to prioritize tasks effectively

  • Ability to work successfully as a team player.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of varied medical procedures, such as phlebotomy, EKG's, vital signs, etc.





  • WORKING CONDITIONS:



    Working in a clinical capacity and providing services appropriate for the high school strength and conditioning environment and various athletic venues hosted by the high school athletic department.



    FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:



    Works within established budget for program.



    PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS OF JOB


  • Must be able to assist with or transfer athletes of various weight/heights.

  • Must be able to push carts with athletic equipment on them.

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time, have good mobility skills and be able to walk long distances.

  • Must demonstrate ability to communicate to give adequate directions and instructions.
