Department Information



The mission of the African American Arts Institute (AAAI) is to preserve and promote African American Culture through performance, education, creative activity, research, and outreach. AAAI manages credit-bearing ensembles dedicated to the performance of black music and dance.



Job Summary



Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Assists with the planning and implementation of the major AAAI productions, including the Extension of the Tradition Concert, Potpourri of the Arts, Camp Soul, and Spring Concerts.

  • Facilitates clear communication throughout the production process between ensemble directors, AAAI technical and administrative staff, and sometimes with the technical and administrative staff of outside venues and outside rental agencies and vendors.

  • Works collaboratively with the Executive Director, AAAI staff, directors, and students to facilitate special AAAI programming and events, including Open House, Meet and Greet, Staff Orientation, Herman Hudson Awards, Historical documentation, Media preservation projects, 50th Anniversary celebrations, etc.

  • Assists the Executive Director with planning and implementing new programming and outreach initiatives, including a Gospel Music Festival, Special Concert series, Black Arts Symposium, National and Overseas travel, Community Performances, and Outreach Recruitment Programs.

  • Assists the executive director as a production manager for AAAI Records and the Historical Documentation and Media Preservation Projects.

General Responsibilities


  • Manages a small project, from start to finish, or 1 phase of a large project, ensuring on time completion within budget.

  • Develops project plan(s) and efficiently analyzes, tracks, forecasts, and reports on project metrics and shortfalls.

  • Reports on progress and provides regular updates to upper management.

  • Coordinates and communicates between various areas; conducts project meetings and prepares regular reports.

  • Collaborates with other departments to ensure that project objectives are achieved within established time frames.

  • May provide guidance and support to non-exempt staff.

EDUCATION



Required



  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field


Preferred



  • Bachelor's degree in arts and humanities, with emphasis in African American studies

WORK EXPERIENCE



Preferred



  • Music or dance performance background, to include African American genres and styles

  • Experience in office administration in business and arts

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS



Preferred



  • Possesses a valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University

  • Excellent ability to read, write, and analyze musical scores

  • Working knowledge of African American history and culture including African American music genres

  • Ability to work independently (self-motivated) as a member of a team




Working Conditions / Demands



This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

$45,000 - $48,000 annually
