Job Description:

Full-time, Tenure Stream, Assistant Professor position at the University of Pittsburgh in the School of Medicine in the Department of Computational & Systems Biology. We invite applications for a Full-time Assistant Professor in the Tenure Stream in the School of Medicine in the Department of Computational and Systems Biology (CSB) at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine.

We are seeking creative, productive, and collaborative colleagues to lead a research team addressing key biomedical questions using computational and systems biology approaches and facilitating the translation of fundamental discovery towards clinical application.

The successful candidate will have a minimum education level of Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Computational or Systems Biology or in a related field and have completed a productive postdoctoral fellowship having published impactful work relevant to the fields of Computational or Systems Biology. 1-3 years of experience preferred and demonstrated leadership in high-impact research, with interdisciplinary collaborations and multidisciplinary research accomplishments in one or more of the following areas:

• Biological Systems Modeling. Model molecular, cellular, or organismal physiological systems across length and time scales using diverse mathematical frameworks, performance measures, and input data types to produce models that align with data, offer biological insights, and guide future research.

• Systems Genetics. Blend large-scale experimental and computational approaches to map the connections between genetic changes and traits (including disease). Translate genomes into mechanistic insights and actionable understanding (e.g., precision therapy).

• Molecular Mechanism and Therapeutics. Understand and exploit the intricate and fast-paced interplay of proteins and other biological macromolecules. Reveal molecular forces driving their shapes, interactions and dynamics to discover therapeutics that usefully modulate macromolecular systems.

While the position requires interest and accomplishments in computational and/or theoretical biomedical sciences, we would welcome candidates who combine ‘dry’ work with ‘wet’ experimental approaches.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to mentor students in multiple interdisciplinary graduate programs, including the Joint Carnegie Mellon University–University of Pittsburgh Ph.D. Program in Computational Biology, the Integrative Systems Biology Ph.D. program, and the Computational Biomedicine and Biotechnology Master’s Program. We especially seek candidates who have a documented interest in mentoring and other activities to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

(1) a cover letter, (2) a CV, (3) a research statement, (4) a teaching and mentoring statement, (5) a statement describing the applicant’s accomplishments and plans for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, and (6) a list of three references from whom letters may be requested.

The University of Pittsburgh is committed to championing all aspects of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility within our community. This commitment is a fundamental value of the University and is crucial in helping us advance our mission, which includes attracting and retaining diverse workforces. We will continue to create and maintain an environment that allows individuals to discover, belong, contribute, and grow, while honoring the experiences, perspectives, and unique identities of all.

The University of Pittsburgh is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer and values equality of opportunity, human dignity and diversity. EOE, including disability/vets.
