Job Summary

Welcomes and assists patients and families and performs general computer, receptionist, and clerical duties in a Nursing Unit. Responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, safe patient environment and assists with patient care activities such as taking vital signs, feeding, bathing and daily living activities.  Collaborates and supports the healthcare team and provides compassionate and empathic family-centered care for the patients and families. Works under the supervision of a RN and in accordance with the hospital policies and procedures.

Job Specific Duties


  • Assists patients with activities of daily living to include bathing, personal hygiene, nutrition and comfort measures, changing bed linens, and diapers. 

  • Performs vital signs, heights, weights, head circumference & other measurements and records the results in the Electronic Health Record according to nursing and hospital policies & procedures.

  • Informs RN of pertinent information and/or communicates all significant changes in patient condition or behavior. 

  • Recognizes accepted priorities for care needs and takes direction for re-prioritizing from the RN. 

  • Restocks supplies such as gloves, gowns, linen, medical equipment, and assists with room preparation and turnover. 

  • Identifies the needs of the patient and guests and provides necessary supplies accordingly. 

  • Proactively identifies opportunities for improvement and promotes/practices cost containment. 

  • Maintains patient rooms and nursing station clean and organized at all times. 

  • Provides encouragement, support and comfort to patients and family members.

  • Assists with transporting patients for special procedures. 

  • Performs other assigned tasks to promote efficient practice operation and contributes to the provision of quality patient care. 

  • Greets and welcomes patients, families and visitors. Communicates information regarding NCH services and delivers excellent and timely service and support. Provides administrative support and assists the medical and clinical teams with requests and tasks. 

  • Promptly answers patient calls, transfers calls, and obtains information to effectively resolve an issue or request. 

  • Ensures every guest experience is positive and lasting. Provides the guest with a "Welcome Packet" and assists the clinical team to support the guests to become oriented to their patient care area and their room.

  • Maintains an appropriate inventory and orders supplies when needed.  

  • Maintains non-electronic patient medical records for code blue and trauma documentation. 

  • Scans consents and calls all consults. 

  • Requests and follows up on servicing of non-functioning equipment.  

  • Responsible for ensuring all mobile computers are charged and functioning every night.  

  • Maintains accuracy of patient placement and nursing assignments in electronic applications and unit spreadsheets.

Minimum Job Requirements


  • Certified Nursing Assistant or EMT/Paramedic - active licensure in the State of Florida - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment

  • American Heart Association BLS -  maintain active and in good standing throughout employment

  • 1-3 years of clerical or customer service experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • High school education or equivalent preferred.

  • Strong problem solving, critical thinking and conflict resolution skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborates in a team environment.

  • Strong time management skills.

  • Computer literate and knowledge of printers

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Previous Healthcare experience and Medical Terminology preferred.

  • Ability to effectively work in a collaborative environment and follow the direction of the Registered Nurse and/or Nursing Leader.

  • Ability to apply principles of evidenced-based practice, analytical thinking and service excellence in practice.

  • CPI (Crisis Intervention Training) preferred.

  • Fluent in Spanish preferred.

  • Strong customer service skills.

  • Ability to learn appropriate software applications.

  • Able to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
