Organizational Overview Each year in the United States, billions of pounds of food go to waste. At the same time, over 35 million Americans experience food insecurity. The Farmlink Project is a non-profit organization that connects farms with surplus to food banks to feed people in need, reduce carbon emissions & empower the next generation of changemakers in the food system. The Farmlink Project is a virtual organization with ~20 employees. This is a fully remote position; we are accepting applicants in all U.S. time zones. Job SummaryThe Senior Accountant reports to the Controller and is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting functions of the organization. This includes oversight of all transactions, month end processes, departmental expense budgeting, grant tracking, external audit, payroll processing, and reporting. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in financial management within the nonprofit sector and a strong commitment to the mission of the organization.Key ResponsibilitiesAccounting and ReportingEnsure timely and accurate preparation of financial reports and analyses.Oversee the maintenance of financial records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).Liaise with external auditors and tax accountants to prepare supporting documentation and schedules for the annual external audit and Tax Form 990.Review, approve and ensure proper coding of all accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.Oversee Form 1099 processing.Ensure proper coding of all revenue.In collaboration with the Development Operations Manager, reconcile revenue data between the accounting software and donor database.Determine the restriction and conditionality level of new gifts and pledges.Track restricted revenue, corresponding spend, and the rollover of the temporarily restricted net asset balance.Record monthly journal entries as part of the month-close process.Perform monthly account reconciliations.Financial ManagementLead the expense budget and projection creations with the department heads.Monitor and report on expense budget variances, providing insights and recommendations.Support the Controller to prepare long-term financial forecasts and strategic financial plans.Manage cash flow and forecasting, ensuring adequate cash flow to meet the organization's needs with support from the Controller.Partner with the Controller to develop and update finance related policies.Help ensure all financial policies, systems, and procedures are well understood and properly followed across the organization.Finance Systems AdministrationServe as administrator of finance-related third-party systems, such as the accounting software, bill payment services, company credit cards, payroll and banking.Responsible for training and supporting staff on third-party systems, as necessary.In conjunction with the Controller, lead any maintenance, upgrades, and transitions in these systems.Compliance and Risk ManagementEnsure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, as well as organizational policies.In conjunction with the Controller, develop and maintain systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets.Identify and manage financial risks.Payroll AdministrationProcess semi-monthly payroll.Identify any payroll discrepancies, implement any needed adjustments or off cycle payrolls and ensure proper documentation of payroll practices. Approve and process all employee reimbursements. Review all W2s for accuracy before they are sent to employees.Manage all state tax accounts to ensure compliance with payroll taxes. QualificationsBachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.Minimum of 4 years of accounting or financial management experience.At least 2 years accounting experience in a nonprofit environment preferred.Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards and regulations.Proficiency working with accounting software and Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. A high level of attention to detail.Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Strong commitment to the mission and values of the organization.The starting salary range for this role is $70,000 - $85,000 with a competitive benefits package. Exact compensation details will be commensurate with experience.
