General Summary



Under general supervision, coordinates day-to-day operations of the Trauma Survivors Network. Serves as a point of contact for program participants and office and/or clinical support personnel. Implements the clinical aspects including facilitating educational and support groups, coordinating inpatient outreach and education efforts and education hospital staff about the program.



Principal Responsibilities and Tasks



The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.


  • Educates staff about the TSN.

  • Educates trauma patients and their families about the TSN.

  • Maintains local trauma center information and resources on the national TSN website and UMMC website.

  • Recruits' trauma survivors for support group, self-management course, and for peer visitation.

  • Develops and facilitates the Trauma Survivors Support Group.

  • Facilitates the nine week Next Steps course in conjunction with a former trauma patient.

  • Coordinates Peer Visitation program, including training of trauma survivors, screening patient and obtaining consent, matching mentors to patients and debriefing the visits. Provides continuing support and education to mentors.

  • Manages the volunteers efficiently and effectively.

  • Works with UM Rehabilitation Hospital to provide TSN programs for patients and families.

  • Works together with the community and trauma center to raise funds for continuing the TSN.

  • Creates and modifies TSN resources and education materials to meet the needs of trauma patients and their families.

Qualifications

Education and Experience



  • Bachelor's degree in public health or related health field required, Master's degree preferred.

  • Two years' experience working with the community as a public health educator.

  • Certified Health Education Specialist preferred.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Knowledge of best practice in Public Health Education.

  • Skills in communicating effectively and efficiently both orally and in writing with a variety of people both internally and externally.

  • Skill in relevant PC applications.

  • Ability to prioritize, multitask and remain flexible to accomplish the programs goals.


Working Conditions



  • Weekend, shift work, holiday, on-call, and overtime may be required.

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.


Patient Safety



Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.


  • Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety

  • Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.

  • Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
