About the Opportunity


This is an open position with Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp [CEI].


This is a mobile (remote) position. The selected candidate must be located within an hour of Brecksville, Ohio, as the position requires visits to local job sites multiple times per week.


This job is responsible for the reliability and assessment work for the Distribution function of the Company, reporting to the Brecksville, OH Service Center, Ohio Reliability & Asset Management Group.


Summary of Responsibilities: Power Quality

  • Demonstrate and direct a solid commitment to all aspects of safety.
  • Respond in a timely manner to residential, commercial, and industrial customer and commission inquiries concerning reliability, voltage and power quality concerns. This may include EMF (Electric and Magnetic Fields), Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) inquiries or short circuit analysis.
  • Complete required regulatory overhead and/or underground inspections as assigned. Apply knowledge of state regulatory requirements for distribution inspection and maintenance, and coordinate and schedule for completion according to regulatory deadlines.
  • Assume liaison and troubleshooter role to customers often interpreting conflicting data between the equipment manufacturer and onsite technician.
  • Work on special projects as business needs require.
  • Support Claims and Customer Service Departments on distribution systems, Power Quality investigations, and various services offered to our customers.
  • Accompany Marketing Representatives to meetings with industrial/commercial/local municipality and the public where technical support is needed.
  • Perform comprehensive outage analysis in support of the company's reliability initiatives and make recommendations to correct reliability and power quality items. Collaborate with Planning & Protection Engineering in identification and resolution of emergency situations.
  • Review and interpret reliability data, investigate reliability issues, and performance history and propose solutions.
  • Evaluate equipment for use in power quality, voltage, radio and television interference investigations. Provide technical support for this equipment and software.
  • Identify equipment needs and other potential budget items, determine expected benefits, provide budget level cost estimates and present the business case for funding decisions.
  • Provide troubleshooting training to the Line department, Engineering support, repair recloser controls & salvage recloser units.
  • Perform reliability investigations resulting from customer concerns regarding perceived high/low voltage, dim/bright lights, flickering lights, stray voltages, momentary interruptions, frequent outages in a timely manner and in compliance with guidelines established by the PA PUC, as well as defined company best practices.
  • Conduct stray voltage investigations.
  • Work with planning engineer on Caidi, worst performing circuits, and other reliability projects.
  • Act as back up for management as needed.
  • Provide assistance during emergencies and storm-related activities and travel to various off-site locations as well as FirstEnergy office locations, training facilities and customer sites, when requested.
  • Attend all required regulatory training.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (preferred in Engineering Technology or related discipline) + 1-2 years of related work experience. In lieu of a bachelor's degree, minimum of 3 years related work experience is required.
    • Related work experience is knowledge of construction and maintenance practices, procedures, work methods, materials, equipment and tools which would be used to determine the resources necessary to perform construction and maintenance work activities.

  • Current knowledge of National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and National Electric Code (NEC).
  • Understand the Company's Accident Prevention Handbook and Manual of Operations, and the practical application in the workplace.
  • Interpret work requests, engineering drawings, schematics, equipment instruction manuals and procedures to develop accurate work plans.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • The purpose, function, and operating characteristics of equipment, and residential, commercial, and utility electrical distribution and control system
    • Construction methods, maintenance practices, service practices, standards and procedures
    • Procedures and processes for the acquisition of materials, equipment and tools

  • Understand and effectively apply legal and regulatory requirements as appropriate.
  • Develop, collect, organize, and analyze information from a variety of sources to develop reports, providing information on backlog and productivity.
  • Professionalism to work with engineer and management personnel, as well as interface and work cooperatively with customers, contractors and the general public, in a courteous manner.
  • Maintain strong working relationships at all levels.
  • Ability to independently lead initiatives, manage change without supervision and direction, and prioritize work to meet strict deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and able to multi-task with competing priorities.
  • Provide quality customer service, both internally and externally.
  • Possess solid effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with PC software applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.), Outlook, SAP, geographical information system (GIS), customer request work scheduling (CREWS), power outage reporting system (PowerOn), computer aided drafting (CAD/AutoCAD) and Energy Delivery Outage Application is preferred. Experience with database query tools (Hyperion/BRIO, Business Explorer Analyzer (BEX), Cognos) and experience using Visual Basic is a plus.
  • Must have a personal vehicle to commute to various facilities and locations as required, possessing a valid driver's license.
