Job Description:


Department of Medicine Quality, Safety and Operations Nurse Coordinator




DESCRIPTION:


Assist in quality improvement and safety event reviews, collection of data for purposes of quality and safety process improvement programs as well as clinical efficiency and operations improvements.


Investigate and analyze critical events, manage data, prepare, and present reports for department meetings in both the inpatient and ambulatory arenas across the Department of Medicine. Assist in the identification of areas for improvements, design improvement actions, and coordinate implementation at individual Unit/clinical practice level and general DOM levels in conjunction with DOM quality/safety/operations physician and staff of other services. Provide feedback to clinical providers when appropriate.

Principal duties and responsibilities:



1. Nurse coordinator will investigate triaged on-line safety report cases that relate to the delivery of clinical care and clinical workflows.


2. Initiate and Coordinate investigation and improvement efforts and clinical issues


3. Collect and organize telephone, written, electronic and in-person reports involving potential quality, safety and operational clinical issues.


4. Represent DOM at QA and patient safety activities throughout the hospital


5. Direct follow-up investigations relating to incidents, adverse outcomes, patient/family dissatisfaction and equipment or service problems related to the delivery of clinical care by the Departmetn of Medicine


6. Liaison with hospital Risk Management administrators, the MGH Center for Quality and Safety, the MGH Patient Advocacy Office, Capacity Coordination Center and the QI/QA coordinators of other sectors of the hospital. Participate on regular basis at the DOM QA Subcommittees.


7. Assist in the coordination of interdepartmental collaborative QA/QI investigations and responses. Supervise implementation of solutions as needed.


8. Provide leadership and project management on a number of Departmental initiatives to ensure change management.


9. Assist in the instruction of DOM trainees (residents, fellows) in QA/QI methods and goals.


10. Assist in the clinical education and dissemination for DOM staff, residents and fellows


11. Assist in the development of policies and procedures related to DOM Operations activities


12. Attend various divisional M&M and Quality rounds


13. Maintain confidentiality and security of data.

Time allocations:



10 hours/week: Various meetings and teaching sessions across the department and MGH

20 hours/week: Review safety reports and conduct follow-up



10 hours/week: Coordination of efforts, documentation, ongoing operational and quality improvement work



Qualifications

Qualifications:



Registered nurse with minimum of 5-years experience in a Medicine-related arena is required.


At least 3-years experience in an inpatient setting (ICU, procedural area, or regular floor (general care unit) is required.


Some ambulatory nurse practice experience is desirable.


Bachelor's degree required. Higher degree Masters in Nursing, Patient Safety (e.g. MS or DNP) preferred.


Comfort with IS and computer software systems required; previous experience with medical informatics preferred.

Skills and abilities required:



Sound analytical and problem-solving capability, excellent interpersonal and communication skills and proficiency in prioritizing and accomplishing multiple tasks concurrently.


Demonstrated success in working with physicians in a collaborative team setting.


Excellent oral and written communications skills, including demonstrated successful experience with open-ended interviewing and composition of memoranda and research reports.


Familiarity with principals of continuous quality improvement in health care.


Demonstrated experience and proficiency with computers, including database management and word processing.


Will need to be trained in and become proficient with the MGH On-line safety Reporting System (RL Solutions).


Proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially use of Excel and PowerPoint) are required.
