Job Summary
Test, install, adjust and repair all electric metering and associated test equipment required to accurately meter residential, C&I, and interchange energy flows. Qualifications for this position will include the abilities to perform the duties of the Distribution Maintenance Man 3rd Class in the Meter Shop and Substation Departments, Line Department and Forty Fort Warehouse as assigned. The chosen candidate must live within 30 minutes of the Wilkes-Barre, PA reporting location.
Duties and Responsibilities
Install, test, adjust, repair, and inspect all types of self-contained single-phase watthour and demand meters. Note: Advancement to Meter Tester 1st Class includes poly-phase work.
Investigate metering irregularities and perform resolutions to customer and billing complaints.
Collect load profile data for approximately 1,600 electric meters several times a year and update the server database as needed. Collect hourly usage for approximately 210 major electric accounts on a monthly basis.
Manually update meter records in SAP as needed and assist other Meter Testers while learning the duties that are required to advance to Meter Tester 1st class.
Work must be documented on the employee’s Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) for accurate data tracking and time management.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Successfully complete a written and physical work sample with a passing score.
Ability to compute basic electrical quantities for simple electric circuits, interpret electrical and mechanical drawings, use basic hand and power tools, and properly utilize electrical test and measurement equipment for measuring voltage, current, resistance and power.
Must complete forklift training and operate forklifts as required for warehouse fill-in.
Read, interpret, revise and work from circuit diagrams to troubleshoot (electrical & mechanical).
Communicate effectively with supervision, co-workers, contractors and customers.
Must possess and maintain a valid PA motor vehicle operator’s license with no restrictions.
Be safety-minded and possess the knowledge of applicable laws, codes and safety-related work practices common to electric utility work (ie. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.269(a)2(iii), NESC). Be able to learn and apply Company rules and procedures (including company safety rules) to the job function.
Possess good computer skills to operate hand-held readers, MDT’s for data entry and various field and in-shop test equipment.
Must be willing to work a reasonable amount of planned (scheduled) and emergency overtime, making available to supervision an acceptable means of off-hour contact by phone.
Knowledge of electric wiring as required to investigate billing and customer disputes as well as building and repairing electric meter sets/installations.
Successfully complete annual training on Annual Switching and Clearance and any other regulatory-bodied or Company-sponsored in-house or off-site work-related training.
Employee is expected to train-up employees in lower classifications upon advancing to higher classifications.
Personal interaction with field technicians, employees from other departments, and customers to resolve metering/billing disputes and inquiries. Also requires ability to de-escalate customer situations.
Ability to operate various types of industry-specific equipment such as, but not limited to, bucket trucks, material handlers, stake body trucks with lift gates and elevating platforms.
As per the Local 262 - Electric Division Bargaining Unit Agreement, this is an “up or out” entry-level position. Per established progression requirements, the successful candidate will have two years to progress to the 2nd Class classification and then two years to attain the 1st Class classification. Each of the two-year intervals will consist of four six-month training intervals which the employee will be evaluated on.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Must live within 30 minutes of our Wilkes-Barre reporting location
Must qualify for D.O.T. Medical Examiner’s Certificate (Substation Department)
A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B will be required for this job classification. The successful candidate will be allowed a total of six months to secure their CDL (Substation Department)
