Purpose



The Support for Trauma Affected Refugees (STAR) program provides holistic and integrated trauma assistance services to underserved refugees and other eligible newcomers, including case management, health, psychological, and social adjustment services. The goals of the STAR Program are the integration and successful achievement of sustained physical, social, emotional, and economic well-being of those underserved refugees and other newcomers eligible for ORR services whose experience of trauma is impeding their ability to function effectively at home, school, work, or in social settings. The CWS Houston STAR program serves two targeted populations, Cuban Entrants, and survivors of Human Trafficking.


The Trauma Clinician provides critical mental health services to participants of the Support for Trauma Affected Refugees (STAR) program including individual and family therapeutic services in-person at the CWS Houston office, in community settings, and via telehealth. The Trauma Clinician ensures provision of trauma-responsive, strengths-based services that support the safety, dignity, and stabilization of clients.



Responsibilities

• Conducts clinical intake and biopsychosocial assessment utilizing evidence-based instruments, screening for symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma-related symptoms.


• Recommends service level based on thorough intake and assessment in consultation with the Associate Director of Mental Health Services.


• Develops family-centered, culturally appropriate, and responsive treatment plans and provides outpatient services including individual and family counseling using evidence-based and trauma-informed practices.


• Provides clinical oversight of cases which require mental health intervention, crisis intervention, and interdisciplinary coordination on complex situations.


• Submits clinical documentation including assessments, progress notes, treatment plans, and other forms/records as required in a timely manner.


• Collaborates with members of the service team including case managers and psychiatrist either internally within the agency or externally in the larger community.


• Ensures compliance with Policy and Procedure in accordance with Cooperative Agreement for the STAR program.


• Elevates the visibility of the STAR program within the office and local community to increase access to supportive mental health services for refugees and immigrants.


• Conducts outreach and education among local service providers and systems to improve awareness and understanding of mental health challenges facing refugees, immigrants, and survivors of human trafficking.


• Provides supervision to mental health support staff.


• Provides practicum supervision for master's level social work students


• In partnership with the Associate Director of Mental Health Services, identifies advanced and specialized trauma training to support staff and interns working with STAR clients.


• Collaborates with community partners to support the mental health and wellness of STAR clients.


• Serves as a mandated reporter and ensures reporting of suspected abuse or neglect


• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications




Education:

• Master's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or other relevant behavioral science in which clinical experience required.


• Texas Licensure required (LMSW, LPC-A, etc.), preference for fully licensed candidates (LCSW, LPC, etc.)

Experience:

• A minimum of 6 years of post-graduate direct service experience.


• A minimum of 2 years' experience supervising others.


• Two or more years providing clinical services in an outpatient setting is preferred.


• Previous work experience with foreign-born populations is required.


• Extensive experience working with people who have experienced trauma is preferred.

Skills:

• Bilingual English/Spanish required


• Strong clinical skills which are grounded in a trauma-responsive framework


• Strong communication skills including clinical documentation writing


• Ability to establish trust and rapport with clients and community partners


• Ability to maintain calm and use sound judgment in high stress situations


• Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment

• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.


• Experience using database for clinical record-keeping.
