Job Description:

Benedict College seeks an innovative academic leader to serve as the Director of the Honors Program. This position has primary accountability for the development and implementation of a strategic plan for the future of the Honors Program. The Honors Program aims to elevate the intellectual climate across the institution and increase the recruitment, retention, and placement of academically talented students through culturally relevant, technologically savvy, and globally informed transformational learning experiences. In partnership with faculty in all academic departments, the Honors Advisory Council, and all units of the college, the Director will be expected to collaborate across all disciplines to offer enhanced curricular and co-curricular opportunities for students. The Director will provide strategic leadership for Honors scheduling, curricular strategies, and student progress and will serve as the primary spokesperson for the program with internal and external constituencies.Under administrative direction of the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Director of the Honors Program, serves as a full-time academic administrator and overall manager for the Honors Program. This is a 12-month position.

Primary Responsibilities

The Director is expected to:lead the development, implementation, and assessment of a coordinated, strategic approach to honors education reflective of best practices; create a living and learning community of scholars that enhances intellectual, cultural, social, global and career opportunities for highly motivated and critically inquisitive students; recruit students for membership in the Honors Program and coordinate the application process; provide orientation and advisement for Honors students and monitor their progress toward graduation from the Honors Program, arranging for interventions as needed; expand the scholars academic horizons domestically and internationally, by strategically coordinating their participation in study away and study abroad experiences; provide support and advisement for students pursuing competitive scholarships, internships, and study abroad opportunities; collaborate with colleagues and members of the Honors Advisory Council to identify opportunities for program expansion, ensure representation from all schools, identify program priorities and goals, approve all course proposals and curricular changes, and promote the Honors Program among the faculty;prepare scholars to conduct research and make presentations at regional and national conferences; create connections and networks in support of students engagement in community service, leadership, internships, research experiences, career preparation, and enrollment in graduate and professional schools; serve as the primary coach for the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) Team and provide leadership for other academic competition teams such as Debate and Model United Nations;work with the Division of Institutional Advancement and with the Career Development Services unit on fundraising public relations initiatives; foster membership and participation in local, regional, and national Honors organizations; teach at least one Honors course each academic term; and serve as budget manager for the Program.

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

The Director is expected to have: at least three years of successful experience as a faculty member or administrator of an Honors Program; at least five years of academic administrative experience;eligibility for faculty appointment at the associate or full professor level;demonstrated knowledge of best practices in honors education; experience with facilitating opportunities for students to study away and study abroad; knowledge of strategic planning in honors education, including fundraising;excellent oral and written communication skills; track record of successful undergraduate teaching andpublished research; proficiency in current technologies and social media; ability to relate and provide leadership in honors education to the administration, deans, department chairs, general campus faculty, and student body.
