Position Summary: The Electrical and Computer Lab Manager manages the daily and long-term operations of the department’s teaching and research labs. The core responsibilities include providing technical support and guidance for teaching and research in these spaces, creating and enforcing experimental workflows, maintaining lab computer and electrical equipment and inventory, administering ECE computer servers, and establishing protocols for safe and effective space and equipment usage. The Lab Manager serves as the direct contact with the UNIT, University Facilities, and Environmental Health and Safety Departments. The Lab Manager directly supervises and trains lab technicians and student workers in the managed spaces.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform maintenance and repair of all ECE lab servers and workstations, including reimaging of computers, installing software, licenses, and hardware upgrades, assistance in peripheral maintenance, etc.
  • Work with faculty to develop and implement course-related experiments.
  • Assist in the installation of new equipment in the ECE Labs. •
  • Perform some repair work on equipment and soldering and breadboard prototyping work.
  • Support all ECE instructional laboratories offering assistance during business hours to students and faculty.
  • On occasion, repair faulty equipment, upgrade, recommend the purchase of new equipment, purchase and install new equipment, etc. Individual will be assigned special projects and requests by faculty in consultation with the department chair as needs arise.
  • Provide guidance to undergraduate and graduate students regarding the construction of their projects or research.
  • Assist in configuring experiments for the required laboratory courses in a regular and systematic manner.
  • Maintaining inventory of common parts and materials. Maintaining a clean, secure, safe, organized laboratory environment for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Be proactive in the upkeep, renovation and calibration of laboratory computer and electrical equipment within the department; attend periodically necessary trainings and obtain required certifications to use equipment.
  • Collaborate with Lab Technicians, College Facilities Manager and other necessary constituents on lab capital expenditures and any relating installations, inventory practices and asset management, as well as general lab maintenance.
  • Oversee, manage, and plan an equipment and supplies budget of $50K.
  • Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Formal Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering or another related field.
Work Experience
  • 3-5 years’ work experience separate from that gained as part of degree completion.
Work Skills (e.g., written, and verbal communication skills)
  • Must have strong communication, organizational and problem-solving skills. The individual must be able to work independently as well as with others in a productive manner.
Specific Job Knowledge
  • Experience with use of electrical and computer engineering lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, multimeters, and function generators.
  • Knowledge of Windows and networking and management and maintenance of computers and servers in a lab
  • Hands-on administrative experience with Linux and Windows servers
  • Office management skills
Preferred Qualifications: Formal Education
  • Master’s degree preferred.
Work Experience
  • Experience working in education-centric labs or environments is a plus.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
  • Tools, machinery, and equipment used: electrical and computer engineering lab software, hardware, networking, and bench equipment.
  • Environmental conditions: (any unusual/adverse conditions such as exposure to chemicals, noise, illumination, air quality, weather exposure etc.). typical lab environment.
  • Physical requirements: (items such as lifting, pushing, pulling, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time, manual dexterity, walking etc.) all of the above are required; individual may have to work occasional evenings or weekends as demands of the job dictate
