POSITION DETAILS

Per Diem, no benefits; approximately 4-10 hours in the two week pay period, variable shift times and hours based on the needs of the department and the availability of the employee. Base rate no less than $17 per hour, can go higher based on credentials and experience. Shift differential will apply on top of base rate which range from $2 - $5.50 more per hour depending on the day of the week and the time of day.

JOB SUMMARY

As a HUC: The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) provides organizational, receptionist and clerical support to the care of patients presenting to Emergency Department under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Independent Practitioner (L.I.P.) within their scope of care. The HUC functions as a resource to members of the healthcare team as well as patients and visitors, is familiar with multiple Tomah Health resources and plays an integral role in communication across the continuum of care. As an ED Tech: Completes tasks that support the care of patients presenting to Emergency Department under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Independent Practitioner (L.I.P.) within their scope of care. Provides care by utilizing specific skills and procedures following a competency based orientation directly related to education preparation.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTION - HUC

  1. Maintains an organized and businesslike environment at the nursing station in order to assist members of the health care team in the performance of their jobs despite high stress factors.
  2. Participates in health care planning to meet the total needs of patients. Assists in admission, transfer and discharge process of patient utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
  3. Performs clerical duties including registering patients, answering phones, and entering orders into any emergency services programs.
  4. Demonstrates proficiency in regards to the computer documentation of patient cares and any other related computerized patient information/documentation in the electronic medical record that is needed by the department.
  5. Supports the healthcare team by anticipating and responding to team requests and patient needs.
  6. Responds promptly and courteously to phone calls, demonstrating appropriate etiquette, with an emphasis on customer service and follow through.
  7. Conveys messages (e.g. electronic, verbal, and written) promptly to the patient and all individuals interacting with the patient and health care team.
  8. Utilizes patient call system promptly, appropriately and according to department provided training, per patient care unit. Focuses on timeliness of response and brings request to the attention of the staff.
  9. Monitors, orders and completes HUC related tasks such as preparing consent forms, calling ancillary staff / departments, and updating registration system.
  10. Demonstrates the ability to obtain, monitor quantities, and verify accuracy of forms, supplies and equipment received and takes steps to ensure they are in working order.
  11. Communicates pertinent information regarding departmental issues and concerns to the ER Director or other appropriate person(s).
  12. Maintains professional expertise by attending staff and in-service meetings, 80% attendance required.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned or directed and within the scope of abilities.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTION – ED TECH

  1. Participates in health care planning to meet the total needs of patients. Assists in admission, transfer and discharge process of patient utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
  2. Documents on the patient record. Utilizes accepted charting practices to include approved abbreviations and legible handwriting.
  3. Performs CPR and is able to help out in a code situation anywhere in the organization. Must also be able to record accurate information during a code. Responds appropriately to other emergencies within the hospital.
  4. Assists with ensuring that there is an appropriate level if inventory and equipment to meet the needs of the daily operations of the department.
  5. Assists with departmental housekeeping tasks as needed as well as cleaning and care of equipment.
  6. Provides quality care to all patients to insure physical and emotional comfort while assuring a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, families, visitors and staff.
  7. Takes and records vital signs, assists in preparing patients for examinations as needed. Observes symptoms, reactions and changes in patient’s condition and reports such to the Emergency Department nurse, physician or LIP. Collects subjective assessment data and assists with objective data collection in an efficient, systematic and thorough manner, utilizing TOMAH HEALTH forms and assessment tools. Such observations will be documented as well as communicated to the nursing and medical staff in a clear and concise manner. Works closely with physicians, other departments and patients.
  8. Communicates pertinent information regarding departmental issues and concerns to the ED Director, ED Coordinator or other appropriate person(s).
  9. Performs clerical duties including registering patients, answering phones, and entering orders into HMS.
  10. Consistently performs treatments/procedures in compliance with the Practice Act of WI for EMT-Paramedic if a paramedic or with in scope of practice defined by LPN liscensure if an LPN. Performance will be monitored by nursing and the Medical Director of the Emergency Department for quality improvement purposes.
  11. Assists nursing/providers to meet patients and family’s health education needs by reinforcing teaching. Provides training and continuing education for staff as needed.
  12. Maintains professional expertise by attending mandatory staff and in-service meetings. Maintains CPR and other certifications which may include ACLS, National Registry for EMT-Paramedic, airway, defibrillation, etc. Continues to update skills by utilizing CEU’s.
  13. Floats as requested by the team leader and/or supervisor/staffing coordinator
  14. Assists with orientation of new employees as appropriate.
  15. Demonstrates proficiency in regards to the computer documentation of patient cares and any other related computerized patient information/documentation.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned or directed and within the scope of abilities.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Must have one of the following: successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant program, graduate of an accredited Paramedic program with current WI EMT-P license or graduation from an accredited school of nursing with current licensure to practice as a licensed practical nurse in the state of Wisconsin.
  3. Previous Emergency Room or EMS experience preferred.
  4. Current CPR certification; ACLS certification, PALS, PTHLS and NALS desirable.

SKILLS

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Excellent human relation skills as demonstrated by the ability to interface positively with all customers and employees.
  3. Must acquire the knowledge and maintain established competency levels to perform essential nursing practice.
  4. Must have proficient computer skills with the ability to operate within a Windows environment.

  8. Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
  9. Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for infant through geriatric patients.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  1. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear.
  2. Frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. Also required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  3. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  4. Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.
  5. Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes, to verify accuracy of written materials.
