Job Description:

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Executive Director is the lead position within the Olympia Tumwater Foundation (OTF), responsible for driving the foundation's strategic direction, fiscal health, and operational efficiency, aligning with its mission, values, and policies set forth by the Board. This individual embodies a visionary mindset, marrying a deep appreciation for local heritage and community impact with the practical acumen to navigate financial, operational, and organizational landscapes. A key aspect of this role is a strong focus on fundraising.

ABOUT:

The Olympia Tumwater Foundation, one of the oldest and most respected institutions in Thurston County, is a local charitable organization that traces its roots to the Schmidt family of Tumwater and the famous Olympia Brewing Company. It was created in 1950 by Peter G. Schmidt, Sr., long-time president of Olympia Brewing Company and oldest son of brewery founder Leopold Schmidt.

Over the years OTF has played a vital role in a range of worthwhile activities, from regional medical research to preservation of Northwest history. Today the Foundation is best known for the pair of properties it maintains for public use-Brewery Park at Tumwater Falls Park and the historic Schmidt House-and the numerous college scholarships it awards to local students each year.

The successful candidate will bring passion and dedication to the Olympia Tumwater Foundation's mission and vision along with experience building and implementing effective fundraising strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Leadership:
  • Collaborate with the Board to develop and refine the foundation's strategic plan, ensuring mission alignment and forward momentum.
  • Translate the strategic plan into actionable goals for performance and growth, helping to implement organization-wide goal setting, performance management, and annual operating planning.

Financial Sustainability:
  • Develop, monitor, and execute annual budgets in collaboration with the Board, ensuring the financial integrity and sustainability of OTF.
  • Recruit, develop, and manage a high-performing fundraising team to support and expand the foundation's fundraising capacity.
  • Oversee financial management practices, ensuring the effective utilization of resources, financial analysis and reporting, risk management, and preparation for annual external audits.

Community Engagement and Advocacy:
  • Act as the public spokesperson for OTF, enhancing its visibility and impact within the community through active engagement with local businesses, government bodies, civic organizations, and the public.
  • Champion preserving history and heritage, aligning OTF initiatives with community values and interests.

Operational Excellence:
  • Oversee the hiring, training, and retention of a high-caliber staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and excellence.
  • Ensure efficient and effective operations, focusing on continuous improvement of operational systems, processes, and policies.

Program Development and Evaluation:
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of OTF programs, ensuring alignment with the foundation's mission and strategic objectives.
  • Monitor and evaluate programmatic impact, ensuring continuous improvement and responsiveness to community needs.

Board Governance and Support:
  • Serve as the principal staff liaison to the Board, ensuring open communication and providing information necessary for the Board to function effectively and make informed decisions.
  • Facilitate board involvement in strategic planning, fundraising efforts, and overall foundation visibility.

Legal and Regulatory Compliance:
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local nonprofit operations laws and regulations.
  • Maintain official records, documents, and ensure compliance with financial and legal requirements.

EXPECTED COMPETENCIES:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in a relevant field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of executive or senior management experience, ideally within the nonprofit sector.
  • Ability to manage fundraising efforts, including innovating and implementing diversified fundraising strategies such as grants, major gifts, corporate partnerships, and event fundraising.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making, and reporting.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong ability to work effectively with a Board of Directors and cultivate board relationships.
  • Robust experience in team management and development.
  • Keen interest in and understanding of local history and heritage protection.
  • High level of integrity, diplomacy, and initiative.
