Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision of the Building Systems and Technology Services Manager, the Head Custodian will be responsible for the custodial operations of six public library branches, including grounds, and supervision of the custodial staff and custodial vendors.  

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


  • Oversees and manages a team of Library Custodians across six public library branches maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety.

  • Oversees janitorial service vendors to include, building cleaning and carpet cleaning.

  • Instructs, advises, and demonstrates work methods, best practices, and procedures for completing job assignments and training of Custodians.

  • Advises custodial staff of CCPL policies and procedures related to job assignments and enforces safety rules and regulations.

  • Performs routine maintenance on custodial equipment.

  • Trains custodial staff in cleaning, safety, and custodial equipment use at all locations.

  • Performs all duties normally associated with custodial positions such as floor maintenance, cleaning restroom areas, cleaning windows and light fixtures, and emptying trash receptacles.

  • Maintains facilities and grounds to ensure safe and aesthetically pleasing appearances of all locations.

  • Move furniture, equipment, and other items on an occasional basis.

  • Perform light maintenance as required, such as tightening of furniture bolts/screws and restroom fixtures.

  • Provides support as backup for other Custodians as needed.

  • Attends to emergencies when necessary.

  • Required to travel to all library branches.

  • Other duties as assigned.

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:


  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.

  • Three years’ supervisory experience.

  • Three years’ experience as a custodian.

  • Strong knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, and equipment

  • Valid Driver’s License in good standing and a working vehicle.

  • Ability to pass a drug screening and background check including, criminal, education, driving record, and social security verification.

  • Strong verbal, written and email communications skills.

  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to effectively and creatively solve problems.

  • Ability to follow directions, remain organized, and pay attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.

EQUIPMENT:

Computer, copier, phone system, library vehicles, cleaning equipment and supplies including vacuum, mop, broom, chemicals, ladder, hand tools, floor buffer, one person lift, and hand truck.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, bend, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Employee must be able to work at floor level, in tight spaces, climb a ladder, or use a one person lift up to 30 feet in the air.  Works mainly in normal heat and light conditions, some exposure to unconditioned areas.  May work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.  Work environment may be dusty or dirty with possible exposure to disagreeable odors and some hazardous conditions. May perform a variety of tasks in a single day at several locations.  Work requires a considerable amount of physical activity, including bending, lifting, and stooping.

SCHEDULE/HOURS:

37.5 hours per week; hours may include day, evening and weekend hours. Must have the ability to be flexible and serve as a back-up to other Custodians.
