Job Description:

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is seeking an audience-focused and digitally savvy reporter to complete our two-person team covering University of Wisconsin-Madison sports , including the highly successful football and men's basketball teams, championship-level programs in women's volleyball, men's and women's hockey, and women's basketball.

For this Madison-based role, w e are looking for a creative and forward-thinking journalist who can reach - and help us grow - our audience on multiple platforms. Thus, video is an important aspect of the job. So is being adept on social media platforms, from engaging with followers to creating relevant content that stand s out in the crowd .

Of course, the successful candidate will be able to react quickly to breaking news and recogniz e trending opportunities . They will have a vision for balancing daily beat and game coverage with enterprise stories . And they will have a collaborative spirit -- able to work well with our second reporter on this beat, the sports staff, our entire newsroom team and others in the nationwide USA TODAY Network .

Th e Badgers, one of the premier programs in the Big Ten , have a passionate fan base. We are looking for someone who can help us serve those readers while also attracting new ones , both in Wisconsin and beyond .

Among the qualities we're looking for is a journalist who excels at:

  • Aggressive, independent reporting and clear, insightful writing and storytelling.
  • Developing sources and digging into data to better break news and explain the news.
  • Interacting with audiences via a variety of digital channels, including social media, video, Q&A chats, live coverage, podcasts, etc.
  • Providing both in-the-moment and deep-dive analysis.
  • Plugging into analytics to respond to what's resonating with audiences.
  • Exploring trends, issues and behind-the-scenes features concerning Badgers sports and the Big Ten Conference.
  • Strong ethics and principles of fairness and honesty.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in journalism or related field.
  • At least 3 years' experience in a newsroom.
  • Expert at using social media platforms; including but not limited to Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok and Reddit.
  • Experience shooting and editing photos and video on a mobile device.
  • Comfort building a beat and communicating with athletes and coaches.
  • Command of AP writing, spelling, grammar, and style.
  • Good fact checking and reporting skills.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented and flexible.
  • Open to new ideas, new experiences and learning on the job.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively inside and outside the organization.
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends.
  • This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
