We are looking for a skilled Data Engineer / DBA to join our team in Washington, DC. This is a hybrid role that requires a strong foundation in data engineering, database administration, and a passion for building scalable data architectures. As our Data Engineer / DBA, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining Kastle’s data infrastructure, ensuring high availability, security, and performance. You will play a key role in both day-to-day database operations and in building the architecture that enables us to leverage our data for business insights and scalable solutions. This is a critical role within the organization, as we are shifting towards modernizing our infrastructure, removing business logic from stored procedures, and expanding our capabilities in data analytics and automation.

Responsibilities

Database Administration:

  • Monitor and maintain database systems (MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL) for optimal performance, security, and availability.
  • Manage backups, disaster recovery plans, and high availability solutions to ensure system resilience.
  • Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., SOC2, GDPR).
  • Optimize database queries, stored procedures, and indexes for performance tuning and efficient data access.
  • Perform capacity planning and recommend improvements to current systems

Data Engineering:

  • Design, implement, and maintain data pipelines to support both operational systems and data analytics platforms.
  • Develop and manage ETL processes to extract, transform, and load data from various sources into our data warehouse and operational databases.
  • Collaborate with software engineering teams to modernize the architecture, ensuring separation of business logic from stored procedures.
  • Work closely with Product Management to understand data needs for product development and feature analytics.
  • Implement best practices for data governance, data quality, and data modeling.

Collaboration and Innovation:

  • Work alongside the DevOps and engineering teams to improve the CI/CD process related to data management and deployment.
  • Drive initiatives to automate repetitive tasks in database administration and data engineering.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of the new architecture, leveraging cloud platforms like MSFT Azure.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database issues in a 24x7 environment, supporting on-call engineering teams when necessary.



Qualifications



  • 5+ years of experience in a combined data engineering and database administration role.
  • Proven experience with MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.
  • Strong understanding of ETL processes, data warehousing, and data architecture principles.
  • Experience with Azure or similar cloud platforms for database management and data pipeline solutions.
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices (containerization, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD) and experience collaborating with DevOps teams.
  • Proficiency in performance tuning, query optimization, and index management.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell) to automate database tasks.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred but not required:

  • Experience with NoSQL databases like MongoDB or Redis.
  • Familiarity with KPI dashboards and reporting frameworks for monitoring database performance.
  • Prior experience working in a 24x7 operations environment.
  • Knowledge of security best practices in data management, including encryption, data masking, and access controls.
  • Experience in data migration projects from legacy systems to modern, cloud-based platforms.
