Job Description:

The USA TODAY NETWORK is seeking a dynamic Deputy Director of Sports to lead rapid change and sustainable readership growth within the nation's largest legacy media organization.

The candidate will have a hunger for innovation and audience development and the expertise to maximize the impact of more than 230 sports departments across the country, including USA TODAY, For The Win, Golfweek, and metro newsrooms such as the Detroit Free Press, Arizona Republic, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Indianapolis Star.

This is a big job that demands strong leadership, proven project management and content monetization skills and a commitment to creating change in fast-moving environments. The highest level of collaboration in the industry is required to steer nearly 1,000 sports journalists to unrealized heights.

This job reports directly to the Executive Editor of Sports in the USA TODAY Network. The candidate will take ownership of leading growth across the enterprise, while also playing a leading role in creating new products, techniques and strategies to achieve the company's mission of becoming the most-read sports network in the nation.

An ability to coach leaders to maximize all techniques in the journalistic tool belt is required, from breaking news to long-form storytelling to quick-hit trending news to affiliate revenue generation and everything in between.

This is a remote job, which means staying on task is an integral aspect of the role. Remote candidates in all states except Alaska & Hawaii are welcome to apply.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead USA TODAY Network strategy development, implementation and execution.
  • Create accountability via clear expectations and high efficiency to put USA TODAY Network on meteoric path to sports growth.
  • Be on the bleeding edge of the innovation in the industry, identifying new-age techniques and products to grow the business in the short- and long-term.
  • Maximize growth during core sports seasons, and tentpole events.
  • Work with sports leaders across the USA TODAY Network to innovate locally to maximize impact and grow the company.
  • Work with Executive Editor, Sports, to develop cutting-age content revenue techniques to put the organization on a stable reinvestment path.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 10 years' experience as a respected sports journalism leader, with focus on digital content and multimedia platforms.
  • Experience in high-level decision-making with complex, impactful or sensitive news content.
  • Advanced understanding of various news and information content management systems.
  • A history of successful leadership, collaboration, innovation and goal achievement.
  • Demonstrated change leader who collaborates and communicates effectively with diverse peoples and personalities.
  • Demonstrated record of leading a coverage team, including remote writers.
  • Proven history of guiding strong watchdog, enterprise and features work across multiple platforms.
  • Strong social media skills.
  • Understanding of best uses of live and recorded video and how to inculcate video skills throughout the team.
  • Strong competitive instincts and intellectual curiosity.
  • Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.

    The annualized base salary for this role will range between $79,200 and $186,300 . Variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, location, and union representation, if applicable.
