Substation Physical Designer

Forest Park, GA

3 Year Contract

Summary:

The Supplemental Substation Physical Designer is responsible for creating and modifying designs for High Voltage Substations in 2D and 3D formats, supporting the design criteria and standardization efforts for our Energy and Utilities client. This role involves producing engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements while prioritizing safety, quality, and cost efficiency. The Designer will collaborate with multiple teams, including engineering, vendors, and field services, to ensure successful project completion from concept through construction.

Responsibilities:
  • Create and modify 2D and 3D designs for High Voltage Substations, including layouts for foundations, grounding, conduits, substation equipment, and bus designs.
  • Develop engineering drawings using AutoCAD and Autodesk Map 3D.
  • Specify and order materials, including stock, non-stock, and shop-fabricated components for substation projects.
  • Ensure that designs adhere to safety, quality, scheduling, and cost requirements.
  • Transmit drawing packages and specifications using internal job transmittal programs.
  • Coordinate and communicate with engineers, vendors, manufacturers, and other departments to resolve technical and material issues.
  • Support substation construction, field services, project management, and maintenance departments.
  • Conduct site visits to substation locations during pre-construction, construction, and post-construction phases.
  • Ensure compliance with all design standards and safety regulations.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong understanding of High Voltage Substation equipment and utility grid operations is preferred.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and 3D modeling software such as Autodesk Inventor or Autodesk Map 3D is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of electrical system theory, the National Electric Safety Code, the National Electric Code, and OSHA safety standards.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, working well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience using project management software like Primavera (P6) and document management systems such as TEAMS, STOMP, and MAXIMO.
  • Willingness to travel for site visits and project-related activities.
