Responsibilities include ensuring public safety in a multi-cultural environment in the third largest police department in Allegheny County. Police Officer duties include vehicular and foot patrol of university property, enforcement of criminal and traffic laws; protection of persons and property; investigation of crimes; completion of police reports; testimony in court; and assistance to other law enforcement agencies. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or other related field from an accredited college or University and must have obtained Pennsylvania Act 120 certification prior to appointment; possess a valid PA driver’s license; as well as a safe driving record.
OBSERVATION, PATROL & ENFORCEMENT Patrols grounds, buildings in vehicle and on foot; checks/secures all University property in assigned area. Actively and continuously monitors and evaluates all activity in assigned areas. Identifies, assesses, and reports suspicious persons/activities and trends; initiates appropriate action(s) to respond to each situation. Provide assistance, direction and information as needed based upon the situation. Enforces traffic regulations, restrictions, laws. Recognizes and reports safety hazards.
RESPONSE TO CALLS FOR SERVICE Responds immediately to all requests for service and takes appropriate action(s). Conducts effective, thorough preliminary, and follow-up investigations. Provide appropriate assistance. Transportation and direction to all persons who need it. Resolve conflict through effective problem assessment. Communication in accordance with Federal and State laws, Local ordinances, and University and Department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Interacts appropriately with all persons in a courteous, fair and respectful manner. Provides safety and protection continuously to all members of and visitors to the University and Community, as well as protection of university property. Incumbent must meet the minimum physical and psychological standards as set forth by the Municipal Police Officers Education & Training Commission.
Incumbent may be expected to bend and walk for extended periods of time. Situations may arise when the incumbent is expected to run for an extended period, lift heavy objects, or perform other strenuous physical activity. Incumbent must pass a fitness assessment.
