Job Description:

Ameriprise Financial has an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Manager of Payroll Tax to join our team! This role will oversee payroll tax compliance for our large multi- state U.S. corporation, working across multiple functions including corporate tax, compensation, and benefits to ensure accurate taxation of deferred compensation in the form of stock options, restricted stock, and cash distributions. These are often complex transactions with multi-state tax implications for our executive employees. As the Senior Manager, you will also ensure employee data is set up accurately based on work and resident locations, including the application of appropriate rules for employees who work in multiple states and interact with outside vendors to ensure that all payroll tax filings are remitted timely and accurately.

Key Responsibilities


  • Manage the timely and accurate execution of all payroll tax related processes and ensure legal compliance with payroll rules. Oversee federal, state, and local tax reporting and remittances to the respective jurisdictions.Manage and oversee vendor relationship with ADP and ensure effective and accurate development and implementation of tax payment procedures and timely remittances.


  • Manage the year-end multi-state process with our vendor to ensure correct state wage reporting on employees' Form W-2s. Understand and be able to facilitate the application of state rules for non-resident taxation for various types of deferred compensation, including non-qualified stock options, restricted stock awards/units, and other cash and stock programs.


  • Co-lead year-end payroll processing- Ensure accuracy of Form W-2s by taking the lead in reviewing error reports, box requirements, and other related compliance items.Requires coordination across various HR teams and with our vendor ADP.


  • Support senior executives and provide tax information as requested.This may require extensive manual calculations to forecast wage and tax estimates.


  • Keep up to date on payroll tax changes and work with HR Systems to ensure required updates are configured, tested, and assigned to the appropriate employees.


  • Manage federal, state, and local payroll tax audits, by gathering necessary data, drafting audit responses, partnering with corporate tax, and reviewing with internal stakeholders prior to responding.


  • Support Advisor Field Compensation on payroll issues, as needed.


  • Review and approve Payroll Account Reconciliations and prepare correcting payroll journal entries as required.


  • Manage escalated payroll queries related to payroll tax within ServiceNow case management to ensure timely resolution.


  • Provide direction to junior payroll tax analysts in the following areas: (1) review of employee state/local tax records, (2) review of payroll tax notices that a 3rd party vendor is unable to resolve, (3) Responses to employee inquiries regarding paycheck taxation and W-2 questions, (4) issuance of W-2 corrections when necessary.


Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent.


  • In depth knowledge of payroll, accounting principles, and payroll tax regulations, with 7-10+ years of progressive experience in payroll and payroll tax.


  • Multi-State tracking and reporting knowledge and applied practical experience. Experience with non-resident taxation for several items such as NQSOs, RSAs/RSUs, deferred compensation cash payments and shares of stock, and annual bonuses earned in a previous year.


  • Experience with system maintenance and ability to work with technology partners to solve complex system issues.


  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.


  • The ability to perform complex payroll tax calculations manually as needed.


  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.


  • Analytical skills to problem solve and make recommendations for process improvements.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation.


  • Experience with Workday payroll and outsourced tax, wage payments, and garnishment services.


  • Experience working in a global organization
