Position Description

Employees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and is responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards may be present due to use of radioactive, carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances. Responsibilities also include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and laboratory equipment, and ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.

Major/Essential Functions



  • The laboratory of Petar Grozdanov, Ph.D. is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic candidate to join an interdisciplinary, collaborative group studying a range of fundamental questions on regulation of alternative polyadenylation (APA) in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, and how APA regulates gene expression in these conditions.

  • The research will be conducted primarily in the Department of Cell Biology and Biochemistry in the School of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Lubbock, TX, in collaboration with laboratories in the Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience.

  • The position will require the candidate to work with small animals (mice), cell culture, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). It will also involve interaction and coordination with collaborators' labs.

  • Be highly self-motivated with strong interest in learning new knowledge and techniques.

  • Have excellent communication and organizational skills, including attention to details.

  • The position will be funded for two years with a possibility for an extension.

Preferred Qualifications



  • General experience and expertise in laboratory techniques broadly used in biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology research, including handling and processing animal tissues and working with advanced instrumentation.

  • Experiences in successfully working with cell lines, viral transduction, three-dimensional cell cultures, handling mice, genotyping and treating mice would be a plus.

  • Experiences in basic immunohistochemistry (IHC), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and microscopy would be a plus.

  • B.A., B.S., or M.S. in Biology, Biochemistry, or Chemistry.

  • Capable of conceptualizing, designing experiments and conducting studies independently would be a plus.
