Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Department of Epidemiology is one of the seven departments located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The department's primary focus is to the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. We provide strong training in research methods and opportunities for the application of epidemiology to a wide range of health problems through our research. The achievements of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni have enabled us to become one of the leading academic departments of epidemiology in the world. The department has 30 Tenured-Tenure Track / 7 Joint Tenure-Track Faculty, 25 Fixed Term / 3 Joint Fixed Term Faculty, 120 Adjuncts, 19 EHRA Non-Faculty, 15 Postdocs, 34 SHRA (Staff), 44 SHRA Temporary and 202 Students. The department's operating budget is 27 million a year.


Position Summary:

Successful candidates will join the newly formed Atlantic Coast Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics and Analytics (ACCIDDA) on a project aimed at developing software and analytic tools to perform disease modeling and critical analytics in response to infectious disease outbreaks. ACCIDDA is part of the newly formed CDC-funded national network of centers of excellence for Outbreak Analytics and Disease Modeling (OADM), named Insight Net. This position's efforts will be dedicated to running, analyzing and reporting on emergency and specialized rounds of the U.S. Scenario Modeling Hub with a focus on informing critical policy questions around infectious disease response. This position will collaborate with a network of scientists and public health practitioners to develop solutions to problems that have direct impacts on population health. Work with this center will provide numerous opportunities to work with other Insight Net centers and public health partners, as well as have a direct impact on the work of the CDC Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, computational biology, public health, or a related field


Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

* Research experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, computational biology, computer science, public health, or a related field
* Experience in epidemiology, statistics, or other quantitative field
* Experience in infectious disease dynamics, epidemic modeling, and/or machine learning and artificial intelligence


Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

* Writing programs and performing analysis in R and/or Python
* Experience with version control systems like Git
* Experience working as part of large-scale research, scientific, medical, or academic projects
* Experience working in, or in support of, public health agencies or departments


Special Physical/Mental Requirements :

These efforts include preparedness for emergency response to infectious threats. As such, high-stress conditions involving rapid staff deployment and emergency protocol implementation might be experienced.
