Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Director of the Academic Success Center (ASC), the Academic Coach provides direct support to students as a means to improve academic performance and retention.


Job Summary:


Manages outreach and support services for students on academic probation in collaboration with student services offices across campus.


  • Offers individualized summer academic coaching.

  • Develops and facilitates Serious About Success seminars.

  • Coordinates with academic colleges on support and outreach.

  • Communicates with advisors regarding student progress.

  • Develops Success Contracts with students and monitors progress toward goals.

  • Tracks student participation in success initiatives.

  • Meets with students each semester for interim grade consultations.

  • Supervises, trains and hires student peer academic coaches.

  • Supervises interns through the Master of Social Work program.

  • Compiles probation data and provides information for the ASC annual report.



Provides outreach to academically vulnerable students referred to the ASC by faculty and staff.

  • Works with students to identify academic and non-academic barriers to success and appropriate solutions and resources for support.

  • Connects with referred students to create success plans and provides general case management support.

  • Collaborates with faculty and administrative offices to provide holistic student support.

  • Collaborates with campus departments/offices to develop and refine protocols for identifying academically vulnerable students.

  • Provides timely feedback to faculty on the status of their referrals.

  • Tracks data for reporting purposes.


Directs the Academic Action Plan (AAP) process and reports data to Financial Aid.

  • Meets with students submitting Financial Aid appeals to create AAPs.

  • Tracks student compliance with AAP requirements.

  • Meets with all students with AAPs at the midpoint of each semester to review interim grades.

  • Coordinates with other ASC staff to ensure adequate support for students with AAPs and timely reporting to Financial Aid.


Coordinates outreach to non-registered special populations during fall and spring advising/registration periods.

  • Collaborates with other ASC units, academic colleges and special programs to provide outreach and enhance student retention and degree completion.

  • Identifies students who have registration holds and helps resolve them.

  • Compiles and tracks relevant data to provide benchmarking for assessment and review of outreach efforts.


Develops and delivers academic study hall and success workshop programs and develops promotional materials, including web, email and social media campaigns, for ASC programs and activities.
Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in higher education, counseling or related field and at least one year of experience providing counseling, academic coaching, advising or academic support outreach to academically vulnerable students.


Preferred Qualifications:

Experience supporting the academic success of online learners. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with student information systems (e.g., Banner). Proficiency with Qualtrics, Navigate, Edsights and Blackboard helpful.
