The primary purpose of this position is to conduct vaccine development studies for Plasmodium falciparum. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will assist with maintaining malaria parasites and bacterial cultures, limited pilot scale protein production, protein purification with fast performance liquid chromatography, western blots and other basic microbiology benchtop techniques. The Research Assistant will perform animal immunizations and collection of vaccine anti-sera. The Research Assistant will be responsible for keeping supplies in stock, and will provide technical support for the research project.
The Kurtis lab's research focuses on understanding the mechanisms that cause tropical diseases such as Malaria. Experiments performed include western blot, PCR assays, parasite assays, and ELISA based assays.
This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 5/31/2027 which may be extended based upon available funding.
Education and Experience
Required: B.S. or B.A. in Biology-related field.
Required: 1-2 years relevant research experience in molecular biology, parasitology and immunology
Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
General background knowledge of malaria parasite biology is a plus
