General Summary: The Communications Specialist is a member of the university's central Office of Communications and participates in all activities of the office, including developing and writing news stories for the website and university publications, monitoring media coverage and compiling news clips for circulation, serving as a communications liaison to various colleges and administrative divisions, and working closely with the Web Services team and other departments to assist in the development and implementation of strategies that enhance the public presentation of news and information about the university. The Communications Specialist will also support the university's social media presence and other efforts to enhance the university's digital presence
Examples of Duties:
Write, edit, and produce print and digital stories for the university's print and electronic publications
Act as a liaison to assigned colleges, departments, and centers, identifying compelling stories and events that can be covered internally and pitched externally
Work closely with members of the communications and web teams to coordinate and execute edits and updates to the university website
Support university social media presence by producing content and reviewing for consistency with university web style guide and branding
Actively participate in ongoing weekly communications staff and other meetings as requested
Serve as a communications liaison on committees and other working groups as assigned
Stay current on search engine optimization techniques and best web writing practices
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Marketing or a closely related field and a minimum of three to five years of professional experience in news, writing, marketing, editing, or web publishing is required. Professional experience in an academic environment is preferred. Familiarity with social media sites, including, but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Instagram and Google+ is required.
