Organizational Unit Overview

Information Technology and Computing Services (ITCS) is the central agency that supports enterprise-wide computing at East Carolina University. ITCS, through innovative information technology initiatives and service, provides opportunities for the ECU community to excel in teaching, research, and service using state-of-the-market technology and collaborative environments. ITCS is first and foremost committed to providing excellent information technology support for faculty, staff, and students. ITCS partners with campus departments, other universities, and industry to make strategic investments in information technology infrastructure that will help maintain a competitive advantage in administrative applications, faculty research, and outreach to the state and nation. We will achieve this through increasing the core functions and deploying appropriate technology throughout the university.

 

Enterprise Information Systems is the team responsible for the development and maintenance of administrative computer applications including support of the Enterprise Resource Planning system, Banner, which includes Finance, Human Resources, Student, and University Advancement. This team is also responsible for institution-wide document imaging as well as the institutional portal, PiratePort.

 

The New Technology Development Group (NTDG) is the team responsible for the development and maintenance of web applications made available to campus via the institutional portal, PiratePort.

 

Job Duties

As a full-stack web application developer on the New Technologies Development Group (NTDG), this position’s primary responsibilities will be to develop, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of enterprise-wide internet applications housed in the University’s web portal. Portal applications at ECU span the entire university and help Faculty, Staff, and Students carry out administrative tasks.

 

  • Application Design & Programming – This position is responsible for full-stack web application development tasks including implementation of new versions of existing software or the design of new software. Assigned development tasks should be well designed technically and visually, and the code generated of high quality and conform to team standards using new or existing technologies.
  • Project Management – Assigned projects and individual tasks are well managed, progress is tracked and communicated, and completed in a timely manner. Project documentation should be sufficient to explain tasks to another developer.
  • System Analysis – Understand systems, applications, and processes currently in use, and the capabilities of those systems. Understand how new development integrates with enterprise systems and when it is time for things to be archived, updated, replaced, or removed. Investigate and implement new systems as necessary, while minimizing dependencies in all systems.
  • Maintenance/Problem Resolution – Report and respond to issues and support tickets as they arise. Determine root cause, then consult with, or route issues to other resources as appropriate to implement, verify, test, and deploy a resolution.
  • Business Process Analysis – Work with functional areas and project managers to understand business requirements and implement systems that meet those requirements. Advocate for the implementation of appropriate technology for the given scenario to make efficient use of existing enterprise systems. Ensure the system being analyzed is accurately modeled to simplify coding and future modifications to the system as requirements evolve over time.
  • Testing – Ensure that code released is free of production issues using a variety of testing scenarios and methodologies. The integrity of production data and the production environment must be maintained. Software released must work as expected from the user perspective, and production rollbacks or inactivation should never occur due to inadequate testing and verification.
  • Documentation – Write professional, clear, and concise technical documentation as needed for projects, systems, users, and team members to explain complex logic, and document systems for ease of understanding.
  • Training – Provide training for clients that use team applications. Participate in opportunities to build technical and professional skills. Stay up to date on appropriate technologies.

 

This position may be eligible for Flexible Work Arrangements (FWA) under the ECU FWA Policy.

 

The standard work schedule for this position will need to be adjusted to meet the position requirements, which include and are not limited to evening and weekend hours to perform scheduled and unscheduled workload requirements to maintain University operations.

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: N/A
