Purpose and Scope of Job:
Primarily responsible for managing machining processes (Equipment, tools & fixtures, manpower, cell layout all with heavy focus on precision machining) to meet prescribed product quality, throughput, profitability and safety standards. Leading & mentoring staff, covering one or more of the following processes: Turning, Milling, Gear cutting, Grinding, Broaching, EDM, and Heat treatment. Ensuring completion of all orders to prescribed levels of quality, in a timely manner, and with proper documentation by all assigned staff members.

Essential Functions (other duties may be assigned):
TEAM MANAGEMENT:
Manage the assigned team (precision machinists, apprentices, & manufacturing engineers). Hire, train, mentor & develop personnel; evaluate personnel to make decisions on promotion, transfer, or discharge.Plan and manage workflow in assigned areas to meet operational objectives of product velocity, quality, labor efficiency, traceability, cost and customer satisfaction.Manage workmanship and continuous training & certifications of current employees.Ensure compliance of the team with all SMA standard policies, as well as with all general manufacturing safety & regulatory practices.Responsible for upkeep and utilization of equipment, as well as inventory of consumables and raw materials used in the area.Analyze and optimize process parameters, and implement ways to improve efficiency, first-time-yield, cost, layout, and safety. Implement lean manufacturing practices such as Single piece flow, Perfect first time yield, Self-inspection & Successive inspection, Autonomation, 5S, and Visual factory.Maintain a clean working environment in the assigned areas.Communicate pending issues with senior manufacturing management.
PROJECT ORDER MANAGEMENT:
Participate in planning & execution of large project orders to be processed through the assigned area, including coordinating steps for Manufacturing Engineering processes, materials planning, procurement, welding, machining, and finishing.
CAPEX PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
Identify Capital investments required in the assigned area. Team with Manufacturing Project Manager to present these to higher management, along with data analysis to support decisions.Once approved, work with the manufacturing project manager to co-own & manage capital investments for assigned area, complete through proving out benefits per original plan.
Be a resource to company manufacturing projects in varying roles (process owner, supplier, and customer).

Minimum Qualifications:
At least 15 years of hands-on precision manufacturing experience, preferably in heavy equipment manufacturing with at least 5 years of experience in a direct leadership role, OR 4-year degree in a technical field, along with at least 5 years of proven leadership experience in heavy manufacturing involving precision machining, welding & fabrication. Excellent management abilities, including:

Knowledge of, all common processes in manufacturing (including precision machining involving micron level tolerances, welding & fabrication, equipment maintenance, and robotics), including knowledge of equipment & consumables used, production & measurement techniques, measurement gauges, PPE, and quality standards. Experience in reading and interpreting complex blueprints and engineering drawings. Must understand GD&T and basic gearing and welding symbology. Proven experience in championing Lean manufacturing techniques such as 5-S, SMED, Kanban, Visual management, Single piece flow, and level loading. Knowledge of basic quality tools (Gauge R & R, 5 Whys, Control Charting, Fishbone diagram, Pareto charts). Expertise in production scheduling and following ISO quality guidelines. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Ability to think through complex development projects and identify gaps in plans, risks and opportunities for improvement. Ability to develop cost effective and sustainable solutions to problems. Work Conditions & Physical Environment:
Duties are performed in an industrial environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; twist; bend; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee must constantly lift, carry, move, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
