Function of Position:

With a sensitivity to the needs of a diverse population of students who are new to the college experience, the First Year Experience (FYE) Librarian will play a crucial role in advancing student success by integrating information literacy into the curriculum, partnering with stakeholders to improve the first-year experience, and facilitating undergraduate research to positively impact student retention and achievement. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead in the creation and implementation of innovative strategies for student engagement and success, while fostering a welcoming and supportive library environment.

This position will also serve as liaison librarian to one of the Schools at the college (such as School of Social Sciences and Global Studies), based on the candidate's expertise and the library's needs. The librarian acts as the main point of contact between members of the School (faculty, students, and staff) and the library, and is responsible for leading the library's engagement, teaching and learning, collection development, and research services for that School.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Delivers effective and innovative instruction sessions; and provides alternate learning opportunities such as LibGuides, train-the-trainer sessions, online tutorials, or other just-in-time methods.
  • Teaches information literacy classes as part of the instruction team and works closely with colleagues to deliver and assess instruction programs that target and improve first-year student retention and success.
  • Leads the development of face-to-face instruction and programming, as well as online, hybrid, and mobile learning objects and teaching materials.
  • Represents the Library in campus-wide discussions of first-year students.
  • Identifies and establishes working partnerships with campus programs that contribute to the first-year experience.
  • Coordinates and leads library participation in campus orientation activities, summer bridge programs, and first year seminars.
  • Works collaboratively with campus organizations, student services, and first year writing courses on library orientations, instruction, and programming for first-year students.
  • Cultivates and sustains collaborative relationships with students, staff, and faculty in support of campus teaching and learning.
  • Contribute content as needed to the library's websites, social media, chat, or other appropriate channels to promote the library's services to first year students.
  • Collaborates with library colleagues and faculty in assigned liaison departments to integrate library resources and services into the curriculum.
  • Supports the library's general information literacy instruction program; works with faculty in assigned liaison departments to support information literacy outcomes in face-to-face, web-enhanced, hybrid, and online courses.
  • Contributes to a repository of reusable, adaptable learning objects (i.e., subject and course guides, instructional video, etc.) to support information literacy efforts.
  • Provides reference and research support services, both face-to-face and virtually.
  • Collaborates with departmental colleagues on library-wide assessment efforts.
  • Participates in MCC, local, state, and national committees.
  • Occasional night and weekend coverage required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Library Science or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Familiarity with learning theories and best practices related to information literacy instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in academic libraries.
  • Responsible for adhering to the College Code of Conduct.
  • Responsible for contributing to and maintaining an inclusive and collaborative College environment.
  • Responsible for maintaining technological competencies utilized by the College.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with online library technology (e.g., Springshare LibApps, or similar tools).
  • Experience developing library programs, processes, or services that support student success.
  • Experience working with diverse or under-represented student populations.
  • Experience providing instruction and reference services in an academic library.
  • Familiarity with assessment practices in libraries and higher education.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Brightspace, or similar).


Additional Information:

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a range of $59,800 to $65,000 and is based on these mentioned factors.

MCC offers a Flexible Work Policy for benefit eligible employees. Types of flexible work arrangements include flextime/staggered shifts, remote work/telecommuting and compressed work schedule.
