Education :

• A minimum of a High School diploma or GED equivalency is required, and
• Formalized education in the welding field and a minimum of two years GTAW experience, and
• Must be a certified welder to AMS-2694

Skills and Abilities :
• Must be proficient in manual GTAW and able to pass a welder certification test.
• Good PC skills, written & verbal communication skills, problem solving, project management, and organizational skills
• Proficient in all MS Office applications
• Strong analytical abilities
• Excellent written & oral communications skills, able to work in a self-directed or team environment & have good organizational skills
• Must be self-driven with outstanding organization skills, self-discipline and an acute sense of urgency.

Experience :
• This position requires a minimum of two years GTAW experience.
• Experience in investment castings (engineering and/or manufacturing) strongly preferred.

Our state-of-the-art investment casting facility in LaPorte, Indiana is seeking a Metallurgist Lab Technician to join our team. Nestled halfway between South Bend and Chicago, along the shores of Lake Michigan - our facility in LaPorte, Indiana supplies jet engine components to some of the most trusted names in the Aerospace industry.

JOB SUMMARY
The Engineering Technician for Welding is responsible for supporting improvements and process control of weld repair/fabrication of super alloy castings as well as auditing to ensure all welds meet Class "A" requirements. This role will have technical oversight from and collaboration with the Welding Process Owner.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Proficiency in JT/Laser, Weld X and GTAW with the ability to train in two disciplines.
• Monitor workmanship and continuous training of current welders.
• Assist in certifying new welders and recertify current welders biannually.
• Plan and execute repairs on potentially scrap castings.
• Monitor weld yields.
• Assist in developing new welding techniques and equipment improvements for production applications.
• Assist in maintaining weld wire and weld hardware control and inventory.
• Assist in maintaining and writing work instructions.
• Assist in testing and implementation of new technologies/critical input controls.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Job responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Maintain personal welder certification.
• Develop method improvements within the welding process.
• Technical support to the shop floor.
• Technical liaison with customers, 3rd party accreditation services, and other Howmet Aerospace plants.
• Perform all other job duties as assigned.
• Capability to prove statistical significance within inputs/outputs.
• Knowledge of prepping welds.
• Ability to interpret specifications to ensure compliance.

Employee is required to execute the following :
• Occasional bending, reaching, pushing and pulling when retrieving and moving various items.
• Lifting intermittently of various items. Typically, assistance would be provided for weights exceeding 35 pounds.
• Good manual dexterity to operate computer equipment and precision measuring instruments.
• Oral communication via telephone or in person while interacting with customers, suppliers, or other employees.
• Position may require more than eight hours daily and more than five days weekly to complete work assignments.
• Sitting in chairs (swivel, padded, and adjustable).
• Squatting / crouching when retrieving stored items from lower shelves and file cabinets, making equipment / product inspections, etc.
• Standing intermittently.
• Visual monitoring of computer screens.
• Travel may be required.
• Must be able to pass the eye examination required for welder certification.

Equipment Used:
• Welding, grinding, measurement equipment, computer, telephone, and standard office equipment.

Work Environment :
• Office and shop floor.

The duties of this position are performed throughout the entire floor space of HLC. Duties are performed in an office as well as in manufacturing areas where compliance with applicable safety rules is required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to work near moving mechanical parts and exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level is moderate. During periods of travel, duties could be performed in conference centers, restaurants, places of public accommodation, modes of travel, etc.

EHS Requirements
• Expected to assist in the implementation of EHS Values and policy statements and accompanying principals.
• Comply with all department, facility, corporate and regulatory EHS regulations.
• Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Report all job related illness and injuries (Per Employee Handbook).
