Job Description:



The Computational Biologist will play a critical role in designing experiments, performing data analysis, and developing computational models to advance our understanding of gene expression regulation, RNA processing, and RNA modifications. The successful candidate will employ cutting-edge computational biology techniques and statistical methods to support research activities, while also providing leadership in data management and supervision of trainees and other dry lab members.


This is a fixed term position with a current end date of one year from the date of hire, which may be extended based upon available funding.



Education:



  • Master's Degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, or a related field is required.


  • A Ph.D. in these fields is preferred but not required.







Experience:



  • 3- 5 years of relevant work experience in computational biology or bioinformatics, particularly in RNA biology, gene regulation, or molecular biology research and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • Experience in genetics, RNA biology, and/or molecular biology is highly desirable.







Technical Skills:



  • Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and databases relevant to gene expression and RNA modification research.


  • Experience in statistical analysis and computational modeling.


  • Knowledge of research data management, including ethical considerations and data security.







Job Competencies:




Computational and Bioinformatics Expertise:



  • Knowledge of RNA biology, gene expression regulation, RNA modifications, and related high-throughput sequencing techniques.


  • Proficiency in bioinformatics tools and methods, particularly for analyzing RNA-seq data and mapping RNA modifications.







Programming and Software Development:



  • Advanced proficiency in programming languages such as R, Python, and/or other bioinformatics tools to process and analyze large datasets.


  • Experience developing, testing, and maintaining custom computational tools and pipelines, with attention to version control, reproducibility, and scalability.







Statistical Analysis:



  • Strong statistical skills, including the ability to apply appropriate statistical models to large-scale biological data.


  • Experience in handling complex datasets and performing advanced statistical techniques such as permutations, hypothesis testing, and machine learning.







Data Management:



  • Expertise in organizing, storing, and managing large genomic and transcriptomic datasets, ensuring data integrity and reproducibility.


  • Familiarity with data privacy, ethical standards, and best practices for data security.







Leadership and Mentorship:



  • Proven ability to lead and supervise technical personnel, graduate students, and postdocs, providing guidance and support in computational biology methods.


  • Experience in fostering a collaborative research environment and mentoring junior researchers.







Scientific Communication:



  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex computational results in clear and concise terms.


  • Competence in preparing high-quality manuscripts, grant proposals, reports, and presentations.







Adaptability and Continuous Learning:



  • Ability to stay current with new computational methods, emerging bioinformatics tools, and developments in RNA research.


  • A proactive approach to integrating novel techniques into existing research frameworks and workflows.


  • Possesses willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.
