Description



The University of Chicago's Department of Medicine is searching for a full-time faculty member at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor for the position of Chief, Section of General Internal Medicine. The appointee will be an accomplished program builder with a strong background in general medicine; an experienced leader to support and enhance the Section's clinical, research, outreach and educational efforts; and have a national reputation in scholarship. The appointee will provide strategic, innovative, and operational leadership, and will have responsibility for the clinical and academic performance of the Section. The Chief will provide visionary leadership, support and mentoring of faculty for the growth of an outstanding clinical and scholarly Section.



Overview



The Section of General Internal Medicine (GIM) encompasses faculty who are nationally recognized leaders in health services/health disparities research, medical education, clinical care, and health policy. The Section continues to be recognized for its teaching efforts and leadership in the Pritzker School of Medicine as well as its strong community partnerships and outreach programs.


Recent activities include studying the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), resulting in increased demand for primary care for many more medically complex patients. GIM is utilizing the clinical and health services research expertise of our faculty to implement population health management strategies and coordinate care for the sickest patients on Chicago's South Side.


GIM houses many outstanding multidisciplinary academic centers and programs including the Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research (joint Center with Northwestern University), the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Finding Answers: Disparities Research for Change, the Center for Translational and Policy Research for Chronic Diseases and the Chicago Chronic Disease Equity Network (joint program project with Rush University Medical Center). Additional centers of excellence include Behavioral Health integration in primary care, Implementation Science studies, and community engagement. Many GIM faculty play key leadership roles in medical education at the University of Chicago, serving as Directors or Associate Directors for the internal residency program, medical student courses and fellowship programs. We take pride in "teaching the teachers" through several faculty development programs, Continuing Medical Education (CME) offerings and our fellowship programs in health services research (T32 funded), clinical informatics, and related fields.



Research



General Internal Medicine research encompasses studies of health services and health disparities, care for vulnerable populations, medical ethics, cost effectiveness and quality of care in various settings, implementation science studies, and translation into health policy. Our researchers have established a vibrant program of research with support from such agencies as the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control, RWJF, and other prestigious venues, and publishing in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Journal of General Internal Medicine, and other national and international publications. GIM research faculty collaborate broadly with faculty from the Departments of Public Health Sciences, Sociology, Economics, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and the Harris School of Public Policy Studies, and many hold joint appointments. In FY24, the Section's research program totaled approximately $19.2M in annual total cost funding.



Education



General Internal Medicine faculty play leading roles in medical education at the student, resident, fellowship, and faculty levels, as well as community outreach and education. In the Pritzker School of Medicine, GIM faculty serve as course directors for the Junior Clerkship in Medicine and many elective courses; GIM faculty also direct courses for the Master of Public Health program and the Institute for Healthcare Delivery Science and Innovation. Our faculty co-direct the Pritzker Scholarship and Discovery program, in which all medical students are supported to conduct research throughout medical school, and several GIM faculty serve as 'Track Leaders' for Community Health research, Quality and Safety studies, Medical Education, and other types of research. At the level of Graduate Medical Education, several GIM faculty members serve as Program Directors, Associate Directors and Core Faculty for our Internal Medicine and the Medicine-Pediatrics residency programs. We take pride in "teaching the teachers" through our General Internal Medicine research fellowship, Clinical Informatics fellowship and the MERITS fellowship in Medical Education. Through mentoring relationships, CME offerings, and important leadership roles within the Society of General Internal Medicine and other professional organizations, we further extend the reach of our professional development activities.



Clinical Care



GIM houses the Primary Care Group (PCG) - our academic teaching site serving approximately 30,000 patients from Chicago's South Side and surrounding communities. PCG is the clinical home for our Internal Medicine and Med-Peds residents, GIM and Clinical Informatics fellows, and our Pritzker medical students, serving as a 'lab' for testing innovative models of care to address disparities and improve outcomes. GIM faculty also attend and teach on our inpatient General Medicine service, and we support development and quality of our growing network of primary care community practices. GIM faculty serve as our Chief Medical Information Officer, and our Physician-in-Chief for Clinically Integrated Network and Accountable Care, leading institutional efforts in population health management, innovative health informatics and artificial intelligence in clinical care.



Community Engagement



GIM faculty play key roles connecting the University of Chicago to our surrounding communities to improve health, diversify training experiences, and conduct research leading to policy change. Our faculty direct the Chicago Center for Community Health and Vitality, an outreach arm of our Institute for Translational Medicine. Our faculty study disparities in diabetes care and led city-wide efforts to direct distribution of COVID vaccines to communities in greatest need; our faculty hold leadership positions in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the department and division level. Many other GIM faculty lead significant programs of research and education in partnership with organizations such as Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Department of Public Health, and others.
