Job Description:

The Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts School of Music at the University of Oklahoma seeks applicants for a full-time tenure track, benefits eligible, 9-month faculty appointment to start on August 16, 2025 from music historians with outstanding potential whose teaching and research complements the course offerings and research strengths of existing faculty in terms of time periods, geographical regions, musical genres, and/or methodological approaches. We welcome applicants with a wide variety of research interests and are particularly interested in candidates whose work crosses disciplinary and methodological boundaries and/or encompasses multiple historical periods. We also encourage all applicants to make the case for how their expertise could serve students in our undergraduate and graduate music degree programs. And finally, the ideal candidates will have an approach to teaching that reaches both majors and non-majors, and whose topics are of interest beyond the music department.

Duties include:

Teach a 2 2 course load. This load may include undergraduate courses for music majors and graduate-level seminars related to the applicants other interests and area(s) of expertise.

Build and maintain an active research program. Establish a record of creative activity and/or research productivity in national and international venues.

Mentor and advise graduate students.

Participate fully in service, including School of Music and University governance committees and other duties as assigned by the director.

Situated near the cultural riches of central Oklahoma, including the Woody Guthrie Center, the Bob Dylan Archives, the American Banjo Museum, and the world-class First Americans Museum, the University of Oklahomas musicology program allows students to explore historical, analytical, social, and ethnographic perspectives on musical cultures at the heart of America and from around the world. The University of Oklahoma also boasts significant History of Science Collections and the Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of the American West, while the regions diverse musical offerings include the OKC Philharmonic, the Oklahoma Baroque Orchestra, Painted Sky Opera, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Opry, and a robust and energized live music scene.

The musicology/ethnomusicology department is made up of scholars and performers whose expertise includes Native American music, the music of South Asia, European art music and popular music traditions across many historical periods, as well as interdisciplinary approaches to music studies. Faculty research and teaching explore how making, distributing, and experiencing music reflect and shape individual and group identities and values. The department includes two ensemblesCollegium Musicum and our new music ensemble Avant-Gardenand facilitates the Masala World Music Series and the Ruggles Native American Music Series. We share a commitment to individual mentoring, particularly among students in our MM in musicology/ethnomusicology program, and we have a track record of helping our students secure admission to prestigious PhD programs around the world.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in Musicology. Applicants who are ABD are welcome to apply but the PhD must be in hand by start of job.

Scholarly excellence through written work, either through a record of scholarly publication or strong evidence of the potential for publication.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Undergraduate-level teaching experience.

Experience teaching music majors or graduate students.

A commitment to contribute to the vitality of the academic community within the School of Music and across the University through teaching, performing, and service.
