The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is the state's only academic health sciences center, comprised of five health professions colleges (Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Professions, and Public Health), a graduate school, six institutes, eight Regional Centers (six of which include family medicine practices and residency programs), and a comprehensive Medical Center. Its College of Medicine has held a unique and vital role in Arkansas for more than 130 years. UAMS is the largest public employer in the state of Arkansas, with more than 11,000 employees. UAMS and its clinical affiliates, Arkansas Children's and the VA Medical Center, are an economic engine for the state with an annual economic impact of $3.92 billion. Centrally located within the state, UAMS's Little Rock campus is a tertiary referral center and the only Level 1 Adult Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center for Arkansas.

In 2019, UAMS completed a 10-year strategic planning process resulting in Vision 2029. This document can be found at UAMS Vision 2029. Included in this plan was the organization of all of UAMS' clinical assets into a single entity termed UAMS Health. Information about UAMS Health is available at https://UAMSHealth.com.

The College of Medicine

The College of Medicine comprises more than 700 medical students, nearly 700 medical residents, and more than 1,500 faculty spread across 22 clinical and seven basic science departments. The College plays an enormous role in educating the state's physician workforce, producing nearly half of the state's practicing physicians. In rural parts of the state that often face a shortage of doctors, UAMS trains an even higher percentage of the physicians-nearly 60 percent-and the College has educated and trained more than 10,000 physicians since 1879.

As part of the state's only health sciences university and the statewide UAMS Health clinical enterprise, the College prepares clinicians and scientists to make their mark around the world. Faculty physicians provide highly specialized, patient and family-centered care at UAMS Medical Center's hospital, clinics and patient care and research institutes, Arkansas Children's Hospital, the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, UAMS regional centers and clinics throughout the state. Many of its basic sciences faculty members also hold appointments in the UAMS Graduate School. The College is home to the Arkansas Biosciences Institute and College faculty members are integral in leading the efforts of the NIH-funded UAMS Translational Research Institute.

The College has enjoyed terrific success in developing high quality education programs and is poised to make a significant leap in providing additional service to the state, e.g., potential development of a new medical school in Northwest Arkansas. The size of the research enterprise has increased dramatically in recent years and has added infrastructure to support additional growth.

The College enjoys support of a range of partners in carrying out its service mission, including close cooperation with Arkansas Children's Hospital to provide high level care to children and young adults, integrate pediatric research activities, and continue to advance leading pediatric clinical care and academic programs. College faculty represent all specialties at Arkansas Children's, supporting both institutions' national recognition, ability to recruit and retain top faculty and staff, and improved operating performance. Beyond pediatrics, similarly critical partnerships exist with the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System and Baptist Health. Given the rich diversity of the state, the College must be prepared to support a range of existing and emerging need-and will enjoy commensurate support necessary for success.

UAMS's highly matrixed clinical structure, the Integrated Clinical Enterprise, promotes inter-professional collaboration and supports the development of clinical excellence by organizing providers into 15 clinical service lines. These lines, determined by patient need and designed to provide the highest levels of care and quality, are financially guided by an expense-based budgeting process to determine optimal resource allocation.
