JOB OVERVIEW  

GBH News is looking for a Senior Radio Producer to lead all aspects of weekend show production. Under the guidance of the Executive Editor, the Producer will oversee the production of weekend news programs, current and in development, including Under The Radar with Callie Crossley. This role will act as lead content strategist for the universe of weekend content produced by GBH News. As we take advantage of the enormous opportunity for fresh, distinct local programming on Saturdays and Sundays, this person will be key in implementing and delivering a data-driven strategy and program development that puts the audience first. The Producer is responsible for developing the overarching editorial agenda and tone, executing the daily production tasks, managing production calendars, and building and advancing the digital footprint of weekend news programs including development of digital and social media strategy, podcast development, and digital promotions.   This position will report to the Executive Editor, GBH News.

All show production takes place during regular work-week hours (9 AM-5 PM, Monday-Friday).
 

This role is based in Boston, MA, and requires your on-site presence every Tuesday and Wednesday at our Brighton office. Additional in-office days may be required at the discretion of your manager.

What you get to do:


  • Under the guidance of the Executive Editor, contribute and deliver on the Weekend show strategy and show development.


  • Responsible for day to day production and operation for all weekend shows


  • Partner with daily and features editors to shepard GBH News reporting to weekend shows in the form of debriefs, field reports and produce packages


  • In collaboration with the Executive Editor, shape editorial and production strategy for weekend programs across a variety of platforms (radio, Web, YouTube)


  • Ensure weekend shows adhere to editorial standards of GBH News and the GBH foundation


  • Partner with the head of radio production to ensure optimal sound and production quality for shows – both LIVE and pre-recorded


  • Collaborate with Executive Editor and Editor-in-chief to produce special series and breaking news programming on the weekends


  • Strategize on building a universe of weekend programming that exists across digital platforms


  • Partner with digital and streaming teams to amplify content to digital platforms


  • Work collaboratively with Hosts and other assigned team members to generate editorial content for programs and interviews, and pre-interview prospective guests.  


  • Write and edit segment scripts and promos and manage guest hosts for each program segment, as needed. 


  • Direct the live-to-tape radio program segments.


  • Communicate with the studio engineer and production director to coordinate tapings. 


  • Edit and supervise the editing of raw audio for radio programs and assemble episodes for broadcast. Pull audio cuts to use in tapings and oversee interns with this task.


  • Develop and maintain editorial and production calendars for weekend shows


  • Utilize AirTable to streamline production, bookings and logistics for weekend programs


  • Oversee and supervise the production unit during tapings. 


  • Participate in editorial meetings with hosts and Newsroom members to create compelling local conversations and be available to perform other duties as needed. 


  • Serve as a subject matter expert for colleagues and particularly interns in the Newsroom by developing and facilitating skills training for interns. Specifically, act as a mentor and coach to GBH News interns.


What skills you need: 


  • Audio production (Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, or similar)


  • Excellent writing and interpersonal communication  


  • Adept at overseeing and programming a show broadcast clock


  • Superbly organized and able to manage multiple projects, tasks, and shifting priorities, problem solver.


  • Background in developing shows that are sound-rich and that engage the audience in new ways


  • Ability to produce content that can thrive on a variety of multimedia platforms, such as GBH.org, Instagram and YouTube


  • Adept at collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to produce special series and breaking news programming on the weekends


  • Ability to produce pilots and participate in new show development


  • Experience in new show development, including piloting of new segments and shows


  • Social media savvy  


  • Interest in community journalism  


  • Commitment to highlighting diverse and underrepresented perspectives  


  • Must be a self-starter  


  • Ability to work within a growing newsroom  


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE   


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.


  • Minimum 5 years of experience producing audio/broadcast, preferably at the national level, podcast production house, or a local station in a major market.
