Job Summary:
Performs a variety of laboratory procedures related to the processing of human tissue for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease
Performs laboratory procedures using established and approved protocols, which require the broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision; maintains equipment and records; performs quality assurance activities related to test performance; and may also function as a charge tech, educator, or researcher in the medical laboratory.
The histotechnologist's role includes all aspects of the performance areas listed below, but is not limited to these duties.
Essential Functions:
Performs complex laboratory procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles
Analyzes quality control data, makes judgments concerning the results, and takes appropriate action.
Answers inquires regarding procedures, methodology, specificity and sensitivity, and specific factors that can influence results
Participates in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures in the laboratory.
Performs various histochemical procedures on tissue samples using a variety of general and special techniques.
Processes, cuts at proper micron setting, stains and coverslips tissue specimens with quality and efficiency
Assures proper fixation and preservation of all specimens according to protocol
Prepares and maintains paraffin, reagents, and other solutions and stains according to standard protocols.
Assures proper quality of slides by microscopic examination and reports findings
Follows all established departmental and laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols when performing all tasks.
Maintains proper identification of all specimens, blocks, and slides during each step in the workflow.
Attends departmental, laboratory, and hospital meetings
Completes all training, both in-person and online, in a timely manner.
Participates in Saturday work rotation. Participates in Sunday & Holiday on-call rotation
May act as charge tech in the absence of the Pathology Manager and Technical Specialist.
Files slides, blocks, specimens, and requisitions in a neat and organized manner.
Maintains tissue processors as needed
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelors degree in medical technology or related science from an accredited school preferred.
Experience:
Histology laboratory experience required.
