Trauma Registrar - Division of Trauma, Burn & Surgical Critical Care - Hybrid at Brigham & Women's Hospital(BWH) in Boston, Massachusetts

Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:



The Trauma/Burn/EGS Registry Data Coordinator develops, implements, and participates in trauma/burn/EGS registry data entry practices that ensure accurate data, timely data entry, and timely reports to meet criteria for Level I Trauma and Burn Center requirements. The Coordinator is responsible for the daily collection and management of the trauma/burn/EGS registry database. S/He acts as a member of the multidisciplinary trauma team to support patient quality and performance improvement initiatives and to submit data to state and national entities. The primary role is the collection, abstraction, and entering of clinical data for all trauma patients admitted to or evaluated by the trauma/burn/EGS service. This will involve capturing and documenting approximately 150 elements of demographic and clinical information in the database per patient, reporting query results to internal program staff, assisting the Trauma Program Nurse Director with reporting to referring hospitals, and working on enhancing the systems and data capture process.



PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:




  • Identifies on a daily basis trauma/burn/EGS patients to input into the registries per inclusion/exclusion criteria. Verifies information, collects and enters all appropriate data into the trauma registry database in order to keep registry current with a minimum 80% entry completion within 60 days of patient discharge per ACS/ABA guidelines.




  • Performs basic data collection of demographics and coding of clinical and follow up data from pre-hospital providers, outside hospitals, and EMR and inputs into trauma registry database. Interacts with physicians, nurses, and other members of the trauma team and trauma patients to perform trauma registry functions.




  • Creates and maintains clinical and statistical data, AIS coding, ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes, and abstracts various data elements as required by the American College of Surgeons, The National Trauma Data Bank, Trauma Quality Improvement Program, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Trauma Registry. Submits data quarterly and annually.




  • Resolves routine coding issues / problems. Utilizes appropriate resources, including Trauma Program Nurse Director and Trauma Quality and Performance Improvement Managers, to problem solve when needed.




  • Serves as an active participant in the BWH Trauma Center's continuous quality improvement program through various efforts including distribution and presentation of data and appropriate follow-up.




  • Promotes and facilitates the development and identification of existing support systems necessary for improving patient care services.




  • Provides ideas, recommendations and alternative strategies where appropriate. Participates in professional development to assure the most advanced skills and knowledge of a hospital and trauma data information systems.




  • Assists with other department functions as assigned.





  • Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS:




  • Candidate must have one of the following:
  • Bachelor's degree

  • Certification in registry coding

  • At least 5 years of equivalent experience

  • Well-developed computer skills.

  • Excellent typing and editing skills.

  • Exposure to clinical environment and medical terminology preferred.





  • SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:





    • Strong computer skills crucial; experience with data collection, data analysis, and/or data reporting preferred.

    • Ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, dependable, detail-oriented, conscientious, and self directed with initiative to function independently as needed.

    • Possesses excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize requests and assignments

    • Demonstrates critical thinking skills, strong analytical skills, and excellent communication skills.

    • Must be a team player that enjoys dealing with people both in the office environment and via the telephone.

    • Good patient interaction skills and a commitment to customer service are essential.

    • Must have previously completed (or successfully complete within 12 months of hire) the following two courses:

      • The American Trauma Society's Trauma Registry Course

      • The Association of the Advancement of Automotive Medicine's Injury Scaling Course



    • Successful passing of the Certification Examination for Trauma Registrars - CSTR (Certified Specialist in Trauma Registers) Desirable, not required
