The Assistant Nurse Manager for the inpatient unit at the North Liberty campus will manage direct care nursing functions to assure that health services, medical care, medical/health professions education, and evidence-based practice research programs are delivered effectively and efficiently. Positions in this job family will have direct patient care responsibilities. Additional efforts will focus on planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical and education programs of clinical departments.
Position Responsibilities:
Human resource management: Hire or assist in hiring nursing unit staff. Develop and manage the performance of staff as directed. May complete performance appraisals on assigned staff. Assure staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures, and regulations. Understand and apply appropriately the provisions in the union contracts.
Financial Management: Actively help manage operating expenses for the unit. Review with nurse leaders financial reports and provide insights to budget variances. Recommend budget ideas, resources, and cost containment strategies.
Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction: Collaborate with nurse leaders to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement. Implement and maintain standards and quality plans. Engage staff in meeting plan goals.
Patient Care Services/ Services Delivery: Supervise care delivery and assist in coordinating patient care teams on the unit. Serve as a resource for patient care problems. May provide some patient care.
Planning and Goal Management: Collaborate with nursing leaders to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans.
Communication & Collaboration: Communicate with physicians, staff, and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the unit/clinic. Communicate with patients, families, and staff to address and resolve issues.
Education: Provide evaluative feedback staff members and health care students. Work with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education experiences.
Research Administration: Support unit evidence-based practice research initiatives by facilitating the incorporation of quality management and evidence-based practices in nursing care.

Schedule: Day shifts, with unit on call as needed

Education Requirements:
A bachelor's degree in nursing is required
Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license upon hire
Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for the exam
Experience Requirements:
1+ years of nursing experience with demonstrated skills in leadership
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Must be proficient in computer software applications
Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail and thoroughness
Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions
Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient education
Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives
Demonstrated job related experience with and/or commitment to employee engagement in the work/academic environment
Desired Qualifications
2+ years of nursing experience with demonstrated skills in leadership is preferred
Orthopedic inpatient care experience preferred
Experience with scheduling and ELMS
Experience with performance management
Previous experience working in a large academic medical center
