BS in biology or another related field. 1- 2 years relevant experience preferred.
Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.
The University of Pittsburgh, Ophthalmology Department, is seeking an Research Technician who will be responsible for animal husbandry, including but not limited to: management of a breeding colony of mice, establishing and maintaining breeding mice in appropriate numbers for experimental use, monitoring female mice for pregnancy, weaning the offspring of breeders, genotyping litters by PCR and/or phenotyping litters by flow cytometry, placing orders of mice to University-approved animal vendors, and generating and renewing all applicable DLAR and IACUC forms and protocols.
In parallel, the research technician will also help with organization of the lab to include purchasing supplies and keeping the lab up-to-date on all regulatory policies.
Finally, the research technician will be responsible for handling mice in some experimental systems to include harvesting immune tissues/organs and isolating lymphocytes for downstream analyses to include cell culture, flow cytometry, etc. Also, the technician will provide systems and computational biology support for RNA sequencing and 16S bacterial metagenomic data.
Must be able to stand and/or sit for long periods of time completing experiments. This could require several hours dissecting mice and/or processing samples.
