Job Description Summary

The Prosthetist Resident will provide care to patients with partial or total loss of limb by fitting and making artificial limbs known as prostheses, under the direction of and in consultation with a physician.

Job Description



The Prosthetist Resident will:


  • Examines and evaluates patients' prosthetic needs and designs the prosthesis accordingly.


  • Measures and makes any needed casts.


  • Fits the patient for the prosthesis and makes necessary alterations.


  • Selects necessary materials for the prosthesis.


  • Instructs patients in the use and care of the prosthesis.


  • Evaluates patient progress and maintains patient records.


  • Monitors the work of technicians and residents in relation to the development of prostheses.


  • Presents two case presentations and participates in the review of two peer journal articles in the course of residency cycle.


  • Completes a "Resident Directed Study" approved by a preceptor and the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE).


  • Maintains a log of patient statistics for completion of the NCOPE Residency Performance evaluation.


  • Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.




Reporting Relationships


  • Reports directly to the Manager, Clinical Operations - P & O




Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required


  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or Certificate in Prosthetics from Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited college or university is required.


  • Analytical ability to gather information from patient evaluations and recommend solutions to technical and administrative problems.


  • Interpersonal skills to communicate with patients and staff regarding fabrication of equipment.


  • Able to demonstrate competency in understanding the growth and development of infant, child, adolescent and geriatric patients.


  • Ability to interpret growth and development related information to ensure patient needs are met.


  • Able to keep current on new technology in the field of prosthetics.




Working Conditions


  • Normal patient care environment with exposure to dust, loud noises, offensive odors, and fumes.


  • Some exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients.


  • May include exposure to community, home, work, school and off-site clinic settings.
