Job Description:

The Coordinator, Benefits is responsible for administering the College's benefits and retirement programs. This includes educating employees, managing enrollments, answering questions, and resolving issues related to benefits. The role requires proactive communication with employees, vendors, carriers, brokers, and third-party administrators. Key responsibilities include conducting orientations, handling enrollments, and managing leave-related matters, such as sick leave, workers' compensation, and FMLA.

Position Type:

Full-time, non-exempt staff position, offering a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, generous paid time off, tuition assistance, and retirement savings.

Residency Requirement:

Employees of Harford Community College, including instructors for online and virtual courses, must reside in Maryland or contiguous states (Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, or the District of Columbia). Non-residents must relocate to meet this requirement.

Work Authorization:

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States, as the College does not provide Visa sponsorship for this position.

Required Education:
  • Bachelor's degree

Required Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in administering and managing benefits, retirement, and employee wellness programs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Benefits Administration: Oversee all aspects of health and welfare plans, including new employee education, database management (vendor and internal systems), and resolution of claim issues.
  • Compliance & Policy: Stay informed on applicable laws and regulations, proposing and implementing policy changes as needed to enhance programs or maintain legal compliance.
  • Retirement Plan Administration: Manage retirement plan operations, ensuring compliance, and providing guidance to retirees.
  • Leave Management: Review and manage all leave requests (FMLA, DLOA, PTO), offering support to both supervisors and employees. Track leave usage and accruals, and oversee the sick leave bank.
  • Accommodations: Manage accommodation requests according to ADA guidelines.
  • Technology Skills: Experience with HRIS or benefits software; familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and SharePoint is a plus.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact at all levels of the organization.
  • Benefits Expertise: In-depth knowledge of employee benefit programs, including health, welfare, and retirement plans.

Certification Requirement:
  • Must either hold or obtain Maryland State Retirement Coordinator certification within 6 months of employment.
