The Automation Engineer will be responsible for the technical sustaining, maintenance, and continuity of all automated tools in molding machines in the Production Department.

This position is responsible for the development and execution of preventive maintenance programs for automation tools. As well as the development and execution of process controls for the visual inspections to guarantee the proper functionality.

The candidate will design, develop, and implement various automatic tools, as assigned. The position will be tasked with understanding protocol and program goals for sustaining the operation by proper troubleshooting and fast response to avoid repetitive or long periods of downtime and implement actions for the continuous improvement.

The candidate will document daily KPIs to evaluate the performance of his department and work closely with his cross functional team to deliver high value solutions and implement continuous improvement projects.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Sustainability and continuous operations of the automation tools.
  • Execute process controls required to guarantee proper functionalities for all the automated inspection systems and fail safe controls.
  • Design, document, and execute automation continuous improvement projects for performance improvement, scrap reduction, costs reduction and customer complaint avoidance while ensuring a consistent and high level of reliability.
  • Provide technical direction to your team in alignment with budget and business needs.
  • Perform functional P&ID reviews.
  • Partner with operations team to ensure operation continuity.
  • Meet agreed upon delivery dates of automation projects.
  • Execute automation projects while ensuring effective activities and resources assignment, guaranteeing supervision of project progression, meeting timelines and effectively manage the costs.
  • Develop, document, and optimize post injection-molding operations.
  • Work with QA, QE, and leadership teams to perform root cause analysis and implement permanent corrective actions for chronic post molding problems.
  • Provide training to molding technicians for new processes and technologies, as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of PLC programming and relay ladder logic diagrams.
  • Ability to program robots - 3 axis and articulating (Yushin, Aurburg, Wittman, Fanuc).
  • Ability to manufacture fixtures using mills and lathes is a plus.
  • CAD/SolidWorks is a plus.
  • Visual inspection experience required (Keyence, Cognex).
  • Fluent in English: able to read, write, and verbally communicate.
  • Willingness to work extended hours in order as required.
  • Manage automation procurement activities.
  • Knowledge at PLC, MLC, HMI, SCADA, MES systems
  • Knowledge at Mechanical-Electrical Design
  • Knowledge at Industrial Networks and Protocols (Profibus, Profinet)
  • Knowledge at Robotics (Applications Pick and Place, Inspection)
  • Knowledge at DC, Stepping, Servo, asynchronous Motors & Drives.
  • Knowledge at Vision System (Keyence, Cognex, OEM)
  • Knowledge at Corrective, Preventive, Predictive Maintenance

Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering or equivalent.
  • PLC, HMI, SCADA system experience required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the plastic injection molding industry (or equivalent).
  • 5+ years of experience with troubleshooting and repairing automated equipment.
  • ISO 9001, 13485 experience.
