Leadership Assistance Program (LeAP) Summary:

The Mayflower Council strives to make Scouting available to all youth who want to participate through our Outreach efforts (ScoutReach). The Leadership Assistance Program (LeAP), which is part of ScoutReach, brings Scouting America's programs to youth in underserved/low-income areas in our council territory; most of which are families who are affected by economic and social hardships. Participants benefit from structured afterschool or community center-based programs led by trained adults in a safe space. Unlike parent-led Scout groups, LeAP delivers program content to our youth via paid Program Aides.

Position Description:

Program Aides are responsible for implementing and supervising the Scouting Programs. This can be through an in-school or after-school setting. Program Aides act as the unit leader and take the lead with scheduling, planning, and leading weekly meetings with youth, based on the prescribed lesson plans. They also plan, promote, and execute periodic outdoor activities that support the Scouting program and promote retention.

Position Requirements and Responsibilities:
  • Program Aides must register as adult leaders with Scouting America.
  • Complete the mandatory Youth Protection Training and other Scout leader training and curriculum.
  • Provide leadership as Scout leader to their assigned Scout group(s).
  • Review and become familiar with program materials.
  • Prepare and execute weekly meeting plans for assigned Scout group(s) and periodic outdoor activities.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with Scout leaders, charter organizations, and Schools.
  • Meet regularly with the supervisor to ensure meetings are properly planned and executive, and adequate program supplies are supplied for each lesson.
  • Strive to ensure that every youth participant has the opportunity to earn a minimum of one rank advancement during the program year.
  • Track attendance, advancements, and recognitions through the corresponding tracking system.
  • Participate in scheduled or called meetings as needed.
  • Must be people-oriented, having the ability to work well with adult volunteers, community and business leaders, and representatives of other organizations.
  • Must be reliable, consistent, and proactive.

Position Qualifications:
  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Able to pass a background check.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation.
  • Previous work in the youth development field is preferred.
  • Believe in Scouting America's mission and subscribe to its principles and standards.

Hours and Compensation:
  • Monday - Friday, up to 20 hours/week, and some weekends.
  • The schedule will depend on the number of Scout groups assigned.
  • Program Aides are required to dedicate at least 2 ½ hours for each group meeting, broken down to 1 ½ hours of program delivery, 30 minutes for set up, and 30 minutes for clean-up.
  • Hourly rate is $20-$25.
  • A $500 hiring bonus and up to a $500 performance bonus are available.
