Job Description:

A Boatyard Apprentice is committed to learning the different disciplines needed to work in a full-service marina. The apprentice will be exposed to yard operations, sailboat rigging, painting (preparation & application), composite repairs, marine systems and mechanical work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Apprentices will rotate through various departments and can expect to learn and assist in performing various skills in the marinaLearn how to prep surfaces to include stripping, scuffing, sanding, masking and priming surfacesAssist in applying coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer, as appropriate, to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures of boatsLearn how to unstep and step masts, assemble and disassemble spars, tune standing riggingConnect and troubleshoot mast lights and wiring,install booms, sails, running riggingPrepare sailboats to safely sailLearn how to haul, block and launch boatsAssist in performing general boat maintenance and service work to include, but not limited to: waxing, bottom painting and zinc replacementWork closely with and assist fellow crewmembers as neededAssist with inspecting, maintaining, and repairing boats of all kindsLearn how to utilize diagnostic equipment to test and repair boat engines, hulls, propellers, rigging, masts, sails, and navigational equipmentAssist installing and testing sanitation and refrigeration systems, cabinetry, electrical systems, steering gear, and accessoriesLearn how to troubleshoot, test, repair, replace, remove and install vessel systems and componentsConduct thorough assessment prior to starting a job including; acknowledging the budgeted time and timeframe for completion, proving the system and the element requiring service, sourcing parts if requiredWillingness to learn knowledge of marine systems including electrical, plumbing & water systemsAssign parts and purchases to the appropriate vessels/ticketsAvailable to work overtime when requiredOther duties as assigned by Manager

Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training.Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task or work area.Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately.

Technical and Physical Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent preferredTechnical school training preferredAbility to ascend and descend a ladderAbility to work in confined spaces and all weather conditionsAbility to lift 50 poundsBasic boat handling skills preferred Must possess a valid drivers license
